The Hatchets prevailed in what proved to be a defensive battle, holding off the Patriots in the final few minutes of the game for a 36-30 road victory. The Hatchets are now 5-1 on the season overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Patriots are 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Greater Thumb West. Bad Axe started the first quarter with a 6-0 run, but the Patriots withstood the barrage and the game was soon knotted at 8-8. USA led 14-10 at the start of the second quarter, but the Hatchets hung tough and cut the lead to 18-16 by halftime. Bad Axe regrouped and ratcheted up its defense in the second half, holding a 26-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Hatchets (3-1, 2-1) controlled the game from the opening whistle, hitting shots from the perimeter and limiting Vassar’s offensive opportunities. The Vulcans (4-1, 2-1) labored to keep up with the Bad Axe offense, which used its speed to convert turnovers into easy points. In the first quarter, the Hatchets outscored Vassar 28-4, and Bad Axe led 38-14 heading into halftime.
