SC orders release of Daniel Pearl’s ‘murderers’

ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday acquitted Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the main accused in the 2002 beheading of US journalist Daniel Pearl case, and directed the authorities concerned to release him forthwith if not required in any other case.
A three-member SC bench, headed by Justice Mushir Alam, and comprising Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Yahya Afridi, heard the criminal petition, filed by the Sindh government as well as parents of Daniel pearl for leave to appeal under Article 185(3) of the Constitution against the impugned judgment, passed by the Sindh High Court (SHC) on April, 2. “An appeal of the Sindh government and the criminal petition of Daniel Pearl’s parents are dismissed and the appeal of respondent, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, is accepted and respondents be released forthwith if not required in any other case,” the court announced in its short order.

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police Inam Ghani posted two superintendents of police (SPs) back in the provincial capital, who were ‘expelled’ from the city following ‘conflict’ with the then Lahore Capital City Police Officer Umar Sheikh.
Another SP who was posted in Lahore on the ‘recommendation’ of Mr Sheikh has been transferred to Gujranwala.
In a province-wide reshuffle, the IGP Punjab also transferred and posted an additional inspector general of police and 12 other SPs.
Internal Accountability Branch Additional IG Ghulam Rasool Zahid (BS-21) has been transferred and posted as commandant of the Police College Sihala against a vacant post.

The best way to improve the working of the Punjab police is by ending the practice of “political hiring,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday, adding this had adversely impacted people across Pakistan.
During a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and Adviser to the P.M. on Accountability Shahzad Akbar to devise reforms in the provincial police, he said that any official that obstructed justice should be strictly punished.
