On January 1, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh was removed from his office and posted as Deputy Commandant, Punjab Constabulary, Farooqabad. This is the fifth such incident in two years. No wonder it is being looked at by analysts with askance.
Sheikh, said to have been a favourite of Prime Minister Imran Khan, has had to face the same treatment as was meted out to his predecessor, Zulfikar Hameed. Hameed was replaced after barely six months in office. It was then said that Hameed’s transfer was recommended by the Punjab chief minister.

A year that begins with a huddle of the leaders of opposition parties to redesign their strategy at a critical moment in their campaign to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan will not promise peace and tranquility on the political front. And this deadly confrontation is sure to dominate a public discourse that is less a debate and more a partisan harangue.
Considering the agony that most of us have suffered during the year of the pandemic, that ritualistic exercise of making hopeful and ambitious resolutions for the New Year has lost its glamour and pizzazz. Besides, the spectre of Covid-19 is continuing to haunt us. Still, the sense of a new beginning, of stepping into a new space of time is conspicuous by its presence.

LAHORE: Umar Sheikh was removed from the post of Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore by the Punjab government on Friday.
He was replaced with Ghulam Mehmood Dogar, who was previously serving as DIG Technical Procurement, Punjab Central Police Office. His transfer reportedly took place upon a request, made to the prime minister by the Punjab chief minister.
A notification issued by the Punjab Services and General Administration Department stated that Muhammad Umar Sheikh (PSP/BS-20), Lahore Capital City Police Officer (in his own pay and scale) is hereby transferred with immediate effect and posted as Deputy Inspector General of Police/Deputy Commandant, Punjab Constabulary, Farooqabad against a vacant post.
