No 1 Hewitt-Trussville falls twice to Hoover, ends season at 28-6

By Erik Harris, sports editor TRUSSVILLE It came to an end on Friday night at Phil English Field in Trussville, as the top-ranked Husky baseball team dropped both ends of a playoff doubleheader to Hoover.  The Bucs came back from early one-run deficits in both games, taking the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 3-1. The club also put together a 17-game winning streak this season and finished at No. 1 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.

TRUSSVILLE A third game won’t be necessary.  The No. 1-ranked Hewitt-Trussville baseball team opened up its postseason run at home on Friday with a two-game sweep of Grissom. The Huskies (28-4) followed a 3-2 win in the early session with a 6-3 series clincher in the nightcap to march into the Class 7A quarterfinals. The Area 6 champions will host Hoover next week in the second round after the Bucs swept sixth-ranked Bob Jones on Friday night. “We haven’t played them this year, but this is what you want in the playoffs,” said Hewitt-Trussville pitcher Skylar Jones. “You want to play the best of the best. It makes me want to get after them.”

Hewitt-Trussville, Springville celebrate military veterans Thursday night

By Erik Harris, sports editor TRUSSVILLE It was a special night at Phil English Field in Trussville, as the Huskies hosted Springville for military appreciation night Thursday.  Players on both sides took the field alongside veterans representing different branches of the U.S. military. The mix of young and old stood together for the pregame playing of the national anthem. One of the many participants was Roger Treglown, who is the grandfather of Huskies’ varsity player Carson Treglown.  “It’s an honor,” said Roger, following the ceremony. “It’s an honor to represent our county and our service out there and for people to respect us. When I served, a lot of people coming back from Vietnam weren’t respected.” 

Quick slaps grand slam as Hewitt-Trussville tops Mortimer Jordan

By Erik Harris, sports editor KIMBERLY A nine-run second inning thrusted the Hewitt-Trussville baseball team to a 13-9 road win over Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday night.  “To me, this is a good win against a really solid team,” said Hewitt-Trussville head coach Jeff Mauldin.  The Huskies sent 14 batters to the plate during the top of the second, collecting four hits, including a Riley Quick grand slam, to claim a 9-0 advantage. Hudson Boren singled home the first run before a walk and hit-by-pitch sent the second run across. Mortimer Jordan starter Austin Morris proceeded to walk and plunk the third and fourth runs in before Quick emptied the bases with a towering grand slam to left field. Hewitt-Trussville went to the home-half of the second with a 9-0 lead.
