Springville ends season in 2nd round, Gardendale sweeps

By Erik Harris, sports editor SPRINGVILLE Baseball season has come to an end in Springville following a pair of losses to Gardendale on Friday in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Rockets swept the road set 6-3 and 6-2 to advance into the state quarterfinals for the second straight season (no postseason play was allowed in 2020 due to COVID-19).  Gardendale awaits the winner of No. 3 Cullman vs. No. 7 Chelsea next week in the third round. Those two will play a decisive Game 3 on Saturday after splitting Friday’s doubleheader. Springville (22-13) ends its first season in Class 6A as the Area 13 runner-up. The Tigers also notched a first-round sweep at Fort Payne last Friday and were winners in nine of their last 11 games going into the Gardendale series. 

Hewitt-Trussville, Springville celebrate military veterans Thursday night

By Erik Harris, sports editor TRUSSVILLE It was a special night at Phil English Field in Trussville, as the Huskies hosted Springville for military appreciation night Thursday.  Players on both sides took the field alongside veterans representing different branches of the U.S. military. The mix of young and old stood together for the pregame playing of the national anthem. One of the many participants was Roger Treglown, who is the grandfather of Huskies’ varsity player Carson Treglown.  “It’s an honor,” said Roger, following the ceremony. “It’s an honor to represent our county and our service out there and for people to respect us. When I served, a lot of people coming back from Vietnam weren’t respected.” 

Springville splits Saturday doubleheader with Mortimer Jordan, West Point

By Erik Harris, sports editor KIMBERLY The Springville baseball team suffered its first loss of the season and went on to split a Saturday doubleheader in Kimberly. The Tigers opened up the day with a 1-0 loss to host Mortimer Jordan and bounced back with a 8-0 win over West Point. Mortimer Jordan 1, Springville 0 Blue Devil junior Austin Morris provided the game-winning RBI in the home-half of the sixth, lining a single into center field for the lone run of the game.  That was one of only three hits allowed by Springville starter Brady Gillespie in the loss. He surrendered no walks and struck out two in a complete six innings for the Tigers (6-1).

High school basketball action is in full swing. Check below for game-by-game recaps involving local squads. The Springville boys hit the road on Friday night and came back with a 55-31 area win over Pell City. The Tigers (18-3, 4-1) finished with 15 assists on 22 made field goals as they pulled things out of reach. Springville started both halves strong with 16 points scored in the first period and 18 points in the third. The visitors led 24-10 at the break and stretched it to 42-17 after three complete. Jake Goolsby paced the Springville offense with 11 points, followed by Chase Higgins with 10 and Pearson Baldwin with nine. The Tigers have now won 13 straight after falling to Boaz 58-55 two days before Christmas.
