He worked in washington, d. C. , lives in annapolis with his two dogs, and is known for his wellreceived book, intrepid sailors. Its a real honor to be here as part of the marine corps. I am both an army and marine corps veteran. I saw the light in 1982 and decided to become a man. [laughter] lion and the bay is a joint work. They approached me two years ago about taking on the manuscript which was incomplete. He had passed away prior to getting to what i call the meat of the 1814 campaign, the British Landing at benedict, maryland, the battle for fort mchenry and so on. It had incomplete accounts of joshua barneys flotilla. We will talk about that in a little bit. Most of all, what he did have, which folks in england have suddenly recognized is one of the most detailed accounts of royal Marine Operations

I am a visiting professor at the university of saskatchewan where it was about 25 degrees warmer when i left than it is in washington, d. C. Saskatoon is 300 miles north of the montana border. It is way up there and on the great plains of canada, spectacularly beautiful place, of course since it is 25 degrees warmer than washington, and which we know has always been in the south part of the United States, it just shows there is absolutely no Global Climate change going on whatsoever, that is just so it is going to be. [laughter] it is a delight to be here and a delight to be interviewing people on this symposium. When we had our last conference, chuck and i sat down with Jillian Berkowitz who is also here from Ohio University press because she publishes the books that come out of the series, we sat down and talked about what we should do next year and we thought, well, lets go a litt
Were moving for and if you dont believe in that you have no business supporting anyone other than George Mclelland and the democratic ticket. If you are a republican, in 1864, youre going to do everything you can to deflect the emphasis on race. You cannot win the election defined in terms of racial equality. You must win the election if youre going to win at all, defining the issue in terms of union. So what the republicans are going to stress above all is the disloyalty of the Democratic Party. Theyre going to link the Democratic Party with the south. Theyre going to emphasize the Democratic Partys support for a ceasefire, at least according to its platform. And so you have other images. Again im going to skip over. There are other images about mesogenation here. Heres one particular republican car too that shows the Democratic Party in 1832 and 1864. This should resinate to some degree. 1832 is the midst of whats called the nullcasi if icasion process nullinicatoin process, stanch a

The whole idea is to say this is a ludicrous, ludicrous combination. In the end nothing matters more than the fall of atlanta. Nothing matters more than the belief that the war is again being won, and the result in the end was abraham lincolns very comfortable electoral victor. You will see here he takes 91 of the electoral vote, but the one thing id want to stress is that his opponent takes 45 of the popular vote. 45 of northerners cast a ballot for a party who has declared the war a failure and has unanimously repudiated emancipation. Its important to us because when we think about our reunified United States in the aftermath of the civil war, what conclusion must we draw . Clearly a large majority of the American Free population was not enthusiastic about emancipation, and to come back to a final theme that has been the bedrock of

In january of 1865, John Bell Hood visited with mary chesnut and the family of his recent love interest. As he sat with the Preston Family in conversation, stories filled the room pertaining to the civil war.
