[ applause ] thank you. Its a real pleasure. I appreciate jerrys invitation. Its always fun to stand before a group of people who have the same passion as you do. You dont get looked at as strangely when you talk to other people, and im going to break precedent apparently today and have a powerpoint demonstration. And im doing that for several reasons. Jerry did it last night. I dont want him to feel all weird doing that alone. Second, pamplin spent a lot
Ways about the war. And so its very hard to its very hard to pin that down. But i really think that the kinds of evidence that im looking at, it is not just data. These are the words that the participants used, and everyone says nothing but slavery. Now you mentioned in passing, reconstruction. Thats a whole nother book and whole nother field. But basically my take on reconstruction, very subjective. Just like Everything Else ive been saying. Reconstruction would not have been so bad if the southerners had done had responded appropriately to what the war was about, and that, in good faith, ended slavery and truly ended slavery, and slavery relate practices and provided blacks with the right to participate in politics, to vote, and to have representatives in government which was only allowed for the short time while the north was there to enforce it. So the stories about all the economic ravages on the south, there wasnt much left to ravage. And what the south was really concerned about
Were moving for and if you dont believe in that you have no business supporting anyone other than George Mclelland and the democratic ticket. If you are a republican, in 1864, youre going to do everything you can to deflect the emphasis on race. You cannot win the election defined in terms of racial equality. You must win the election if youre going to win at all, defining the issue in terms of union. So what the republicans are going to stress above all is the disloyalty of the Democratic Party. Theyre going to link the Democratic Party with the south. Theyre going to emphasize the Democratic Partys support for a ceasefire, at least according to its platform. And so you have other images. Again im going to skip over. There are other images about mesogenation here. Heres one particular republican car too that shows the Democratic Party in 1832 and 1864. This should resinate to some degree. 1832 is the midst of whats called the nullcasi if icasion process nullinicatoin process, stanch a
The Supreme Court has two cases remaining, the hobby lobby case on the contraceptive mandate and Health Care Law and another on employee unions. Decisions on those will be announced monday, the final day of the courts term. We have many of this terms oral arguments on our website cspan. Org where you can listen to the cases as they were argued before the Supreme Court. One of the Court Decisions handed down yesterday and talked about during the event we just watched was the case involving an Abortion Clinic buffer zone. Politico has this story about the case. The Supreme Court on thursday unanimously struck down a Massachusetts Law that restricted speech outside abortion facilities. A decision abortion rights advocates decried as a threat to patients safety at clinics nationwide. The court said the state law violated the First Amendment because its buffer zone limited speech too broadly, covering 35 feet from the doorway of facilities including public areas like sidewalks. And outrageous becomes normalized. And people start thinking we should be grading on a curve. But i can tell you from the interactions that ive had over the last eight or nine days with foreign leaders, that this serious business. You actually have to know what youre talking about, and you actually have to have done your homework. When you speak, it should actually reflect thoughtout policy that you can implement. And i have confidence that if, in fact, people just listen to what he has to say and look at his track record or lack thereof, that theyll make a good decision. Reporter you know, on this trip, white house sources have told us that the president has been wanting to get back out on the Campaign Trail, but his schedule really hasnt allowed him to do that. He sees the enormous stakes involved. He watches the poll numbers, and he knows the power of his own voice among democrats, among young people to get out there and vote, which is going to be critical, of course, in this electi
