the u.s. house of representatives still without a speaker after ten votes. good evening, i m wolf blitzer in washington. we want to welcome our viewers here in the united states and around the world. this is a special edition of the the situation room. good evening, wolf. i m erin burnett, tempers and frustration mounting, if you can say that, possibly at a peak. the last time the race for speaker has gone on this long was more than 160 years ago. here we are tonight, wolf. it s amazing what s going on. what s taking place is truly stunning. 21 republicans declining to vote for kevin mccarthy today, leaving the california congressman without the votes needed to finally grab the speaker s gavel. the humiliating losses comes despite him privately offering up even more concessions. and we re learning that the negotiators are pushing to strike a deal tonight, in an attempt to show progress. what will that progress look like? will it be enough to give mccarthy the supp
plus we will speak with the new secretary of transportation pete buttigieg live in this show in a bit. but, first, breaking tonight, just moments ago it has been more than 100 years since we have seen this moment on capitol hill. more than nine ballots for speaker of the house and just now after a tenth vote has just wrapped up. we still don t have a house speaker. the growing question now is who will blink first? we re in the third day day of the republican battle over this job. former minority leader kevin mccarthy still does not have enough support to get to the magic number and the top spot. about 20 opponents are refusing to buckle so far as negotiations continue behind the scenes vote after vote. senior congressional correspondent chad pergram has the latest tonight live from capitol hill. good evening, chad. bret, kevin mccarthy expected to move the meter today. it never happened, despite concessions. the house is no closer to electing a speaker than when it started

speak with overnight tweeting damar hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest with a hit, a gae versus the bengals and on the field he was transferred to the uc medical center for further testing and treatment. he is currently sedated and listed in critical condition. the initial reaction of many was that they had never seen something like this before and damar hamlin briefly stood up on his own after making a tackle and before collapsing back onto the turf. now, an ambulance being brought out on the field. before he was rushed off, hamlin received cpr several minutes and many players visibly shaken and some of his teammates in tears. both teams coming together for an on-field prayer before returning to the locker rooms. again, suspended the game over an hour before the game postponed as everyone awaited updates on damar hamlin s condition. holding an nfl conference call with the decision just after midnight. players, frankly those coming to the game all traumatized. what was most i
