How much their Accident Case is worth. H barnes. T ouour juryry aorneneys hehelpou. Im scott mclean in kiev and this is cnn closed captioning brought to you by meso book. Com. You by meso book. Com. Tonight nor classified documents from bidens time as president found at a second lesion, his legal team discovered this batch during a search conducted after the Over Clad Docks were found back in november. Adding to the chaos and maybe the delight of some in washington, dc tonight. If you look down pennsylvania avenue, from the white house to congress, investigations are brewing. You can argue that some are absolutely warranted. You can argue some are absolutely not. But this is President Biden of new reality as he navigates the next two years with republicans controlling the house. I want to bring in former republican congressman joe walsh, cnn political commentator, and the Atlanta Journal constitution, look, biden does not have the smoothest of paths ahead of him, we can say that with a straight face and perhaps a little bit of a Smile Officer Frown if you want to think about this, but ashs republicans said as much, if theyre held bent on not just a thorn in his side but taking him down and make sure a republican is in the office come 2024, how does the white house keep its eyes on promised prize of even their own campaign they have to continue to deliver, they need to draw the contrast of republicans trying to take one man down rather than delivering for people, and continue either putting legislation forward maybe knowing that its not going to pass in the house, and not get to his bill but calling the votes and make each Elected Official stand by what they believe policy related. Opportunities on administrative action, they can take different positions with issues that people really care about, we know from this last midterm, that American People were not satisfied in the direction that the country was going, but it wasnt just about the economy, it was about protecting our democracy, cutting out this nonsense and getting and improving the lives of American People and thats what i would do if i were the Biden Administration, i wouldnt take the bate of the republicans theyre going to fill out red meat let them pan der to that portion of the base, if they do and do these investigations on hunter biden, whatnot, i believe it backfires on republicans in the long run and the Biden Administration needs to focus on governing. Makes a really strong potent about the idea, if the focus is bringing one down as opposed to lifting many up especially the economy were in the focus they may have not been shy on the Campaign Trial and frankly republicans claimed the majority in the house and their platforms were not hidden about investigating the investigators, the origin of covid 19, the withdrawal from afghan stand. This seems to be a lot about the political optics because they cant enforce anything legislatively. We dont expect legislation to come out of Congress Next on a two years because the house is moving further to the right, meanwhile not only is the Senate Republicans are more moderate but we know democrats are in control of senate, democrats are in control in the white house, so absent of that substantial legislation, and quite frankly, gridlock that we expect in the house just among republicans in the house, that does get the white house opportunity to focus on things leak implementing the infrastructure bill, implementing the chips and as soon as act, the white house can say, well let them fight it out. Weve got work to do because they did have a successful run two years theyve got a lot of things on their plate they can build off of. Things like the confidential documents found at President Biden of private office hes going to have to deal with that. It is a distraction, it is a way that his critics can say see hes just as bad as the things hes, you know, the things democrats say President Trump has done but to ashsly points, the white house can say were not going to let that distract us from the work. Its clear there will be argument people live in glass houses should not throw stones but others who have been in the white house have had to deal with something similar not critically analogous, but obama had to contend with benghazi and his term, Georgia Wbush about the identities of the cia architects. There Something Different about this time that you think this might play differently. Yes, i think it plays to bidens benefit. If done right, this is an enormous opportunity for President Biden, as you said, laura, next two years are going to be investigations on steroids, its going to be utter chaos in the house. Biden got elected in 2020 because trump was so chaotic and biden was this calm in the storm, he can do the same thing these next two years and just kind of defensively respond to all chaos thats going on in the house, which legislatively wont do anything for if the moderna people. I think its an opportunity. What do you think though ashley about the idea, youve got the quiet part being said out allow the in terms of its obvious politics is part of the retaliatory perception people have of congress now, but they promise this before they were elected, im talking about republicans, in november. It wasnt as if this was a shock to the voters does that indicate that this is there is an appetite for this or even if there was one, does that mean, its not going to be sustained. I dont think the appetite is as strong as some people might think. Really . Look at the outcome of the 2022 election, this red wave was like a drizzle, where was it . It didnt manifest, what is happening in washington, dc and the Republican Party is disconnected to what is shaping to every day americans across the country. And the republicans by any stretch of the imagination should have teen governors seats, not had many State Legislatures flipped, secretaries of states should have been governors, the house did go to excuse me, should have been republicans, the house did go to republicans but not by the margin at all that we suspected. Then the senate stayed in control for the dems, its because people dont want oversight unnecessarily they want our government to function properly. They want the three branches of our government to be a checks and balances mentioning them they feel like there was some overreach on the Judicial Branch and i think the voters sends a message and i dont think it was investigations, investigations, investigations. Yet, i want you to respond to this as well, joe, you do have this idea of weaponation youre talking about the idea of the allegation was that at the former president was not weaponizing the federal, doj, now the allegation is that biden doing this very thing so the investigation, the investigation. Is to now look at the socalled weaponization to federal government, whats the end game . Is it on one hand obviously to likely tar initial biden but is it also to rehabilitate trump and could that work. I think that rehabilitating trump and giving Talking Points you know, almost theyre talking to trump by having these investigations occurring favor with trump, occurring favor with Trump Supporters the maga republican that is a lot of rank and file republicans believe thats the kind of support they need to stay in office, to seek higher office, the risk is there republicans in the House Overplay their hand . Theyre playing to their base right now, not just with these special investigations that theyre already setting up, but with the bills theyre passing, the antiabortion legislation and things like that, yes, it speaks to their base, it is a message that resounds in conservative media but in a wider swarth of voters i dont think thats necessarily what voters want members of congress to be focused on. Question is if they do this too much and especially if it starts leading to gridlock when it comes to things that matter more like the farm bill that needs to be reauthorized like Government Spending like the debt ceiling, will that turn voters off and could that lead you know, to some republican losses for midterms is 2023 were talking the next election in 2024. Thinking about the idea of Us Versus Them political world it comes down to is it him or the rest of us . That would be the priority, coming back to dont were and im sure youve been hearing a lot lately probably wondering why so much of people actually yelling about gas stoves, not politics but let the gas stoves lately wondering why that is, believe it or not this Kitchen Appliance is the latest front in the culture wars and of course, politics is not far behind, ill tell why and give you facts about gas stoves next. Have you been hearing a lot about gas stoves the past couple of days . Bet you have. Thats because they become the latest political flash point after comments from a Consumer Product safety commissioner in an interview with bloomberg, Richard Junior telling the Outlet Gnats Stoves are a hidden hazard and quote any option, unquote, is on the table. Including banning them. That set everybody off. President biden weighed in with the white house saying the president does not support banning gas stoves, this comment comes at a time of course hes fending off attacks about a classified documents, think about the priorities of how big an issue this has become . As head of the cpsc later clarifying the comments writing i want to set the record straight contrary to Media Reports i am not looking to ban gas stoves and the u. S. Cpsc has no proceeding to do so. More on the facts about the Health Hazards of gas stoves in a moment. First lets bring back in jo walsh, Ashley Allison andtia mitchell, we giggle about how can this be an issue . Talking about this but replace some of the words for gas stove with other issues thats happened. For example, Ronny Jackson from texas tweeting ill never give up my gas stove, if the maniac in the white house come for my stove, they can pry it from my cold dead hands come take it, joe manchin saying this is a recipe for disaster, they have no business how to cook their dinner last thing ever leave my house is the gas stove we cook on i could not be thinking as i read these tweets i thought i heard similar arguments in every culture war, even gun, the idea about the government come in to take things away, is this what this symbolizes the next frontier the government. Trying to take away. Laura as the only former republican and right wing Radio Talk Show Host at the table. Democrats better nip his Gas Stove Thing in the bud now or its going to get them. Three years ago, a couple people on the left said we need to Defund The Police. And republicans tagged the whole Democratic Party with that. They are doing and they will try to do same thing with the gas stove business. I know because i used to do that. You paint the democrats as out of touch with regular folk who depend upon these gas stoves, democrats need to fight this head on. Even the president addressing it immediately because obviously, the reason they had to address it is because it had gotten out there that it was no longer about a connection possibly with asthma or conversations about the emissions even if it was off in terms of the pilot being on in some respects what the government trying to do to get you the common person and attack these industries is that what has to happen to nip it in the bud . Is it already too late. I think its a messaging issue this is a good lesson you know, trump remarks probably werent most precise, maybe not the most comprehensive in explaining it. But explaining it but theres been journalism that explained it more accurately but then the conserve media sphere putting their spin on it that did not accurately portray what was going on, this is the score is about child hood asthma which is not just a serious disease that cost a lot of money and keeps kids sick, children die of Asthma Attacks every day. So were talking about the federal government looking at something to say what can we do to make things better for children . Could that possibly mean in the future not selling new gas stoves . But thats the conversation that need to be had in the way thats much more delicate, thats a lesson for the Biden Administration. Excuse me, but theres also already bans in different states about new developments in new york, for example, not being able to have or trying to essentially age out all these different, because of what youre talking about, but it also reminds me, the phrase that comes to mind is special interest, ashley, because it was seized upon, the idea of this met as you mentioned in put a bloomberg piece talked about in the health risks you had the american gas association, ashley, put out a statement against trump comments and obviously theyre not favorable about anyone trying to in any way hint gas was not a good idea. Is this an indication how politics really operates that special interests will control the day. Yet this was so unfortunate, and unnecessary i think everyone formal republican, republican, democrat, progressive would agree we dont want children to be suffering and dying from Asthma Attacks, i think thats the baseline. But we dont talk about issues like that, we talk about it like youre trying the government is trying to take this or trying to come into my private home. I grew up learning gas cook better, thats how my grandmother taught me. Cooking with gas cooking with oil but literally it was like gas is cook cooks better. When i saw that i was thinking why are they talking about bans gas stoves, when you do research its about how you present information to people if you talk about this through the lens of children and we want to keep them healthy and safe first thing comes to mind is is not banning a gas stove, its leak getting Climate Change under control, its stopping pollution, it doesnt seem like you jump to gas stoves, feels like youre a hill out of touch with the every day person when you say in order to stop childhood asthma ban gas stoves, thats not a Winning Campaign line, i dont know any voter or any party who will side with that but talk to people about the every day experiences they have and the dems can get this back up. Are we a little bit at foment in a sense, joe, the whole article seemed was not trying to go hyper bill he can but the way its received and seized upon is the crux of so many issues that that statement perhaps was benign, perhaps it wasnt be but it was seized on to the president of the United States has to weigh in that today all of a sudden youre losing your gas stove in your house laura its just like Defund The Police that was seized upon because a couple of people on the left said that and the republicans painted the whole party with that. In decreasing 20 Congressional Democrats asked the commission to consider banning gas stoves. Youve got democrats in new york and california who are pushing this. I just think it is an issue where democrats look out of touch, thats a weakness of theirs. And republicans arent talking about this with truth. If you actually talk to people who believe in Defund The Police, its about police reform, its about reinvesting in communities, keeping black and brown people safe from Police Officers who are unfortunate. Stopped and killed by police station, thats what the movement of Defund The Police is whether you agree with or not. But republicans take it and say youre coming from the gas stove this proves a point who knew wed go from gas stoves to defunding the Police Politics finds a Common Thread and how it will be dealt with i can imagine the headline tomorrow about this issue. I want to bring in joe allen a director of the Healthy Building Program as Harvard School Public Health im hoping you can help to set the record straight in some respect because of how politics get involved people have a whole different viewpoint, we have to talk about Gas Fireplaces in homes, by the way, thats a separate issue, what is the real deal . The december study said what . Yes, so thanks for having me on. Im happy to take a step back and talk about the science and what it says about health, were finding is quite interesting and stepping back from all the mismessaging out there, its not imminent well rip out gas stoves, if you go back to the science, you see that gas stoves can emit toxic gas like Nitrogen Dioxide or no 2, it irritates the airway, can aggravate existing respiratory diseases like asthma causes coughing and wheezing if youre supposed to it long enough, it can lead to the development of asthma in kids and adults, cognitive performance of kids bad for heart health take this together, thats whats driving story, theres a concern that burning this toxic gas in the home or having it in the home leads to Adverse Health effects heres two surprising facts. First is this certainly when youre using a Gas Stove Emissions are higher and exposure is higher they can i met even when theyre off. That surprises a lot of people when theyre not in use. The second one is this, this recent study, found that 12 of current asthma in Kids Tripledemic but believe to gas stoves, one in five kids with asthma can be attributed to this toxic gas in the home. If you think about it under that lens the conversation makes more sense on as soon as its a good idea to limit exposure is to toxic gases in the home that can lead and contribute to asthma as a mom im concerned in particular because i wonder about the amount of time say gas stove is on in the home, talking about the cooking hours kids are around in some respects that the window would lead to the one in five result youre talking about stunning for me to hear but also, the cities you named, there are city like san francisco, new york city as well that banned natural gas hookups and you specialize in thinking about the safety of penillics and Environmental Concerns and whatnot, how much responsibility do cities is have in their legislation to get ahead of this issue or to course correct . Well, i think a lot of that is being driven by the Everything Movement we have to get rid of fossil fuels, but the conversation of gas stoves are less focused on these bigger issues around climate and Immediate Impact im a father of three kids its hard to think about seemingly abstract feel of Climate Change but you talk about my kids health ill start thinking about im going to do something about that gas stove, its really important that were having this conversation but i also want to put it in the context of what we already know about things like Nitrogen Dioxide one of those gas, supervises me theres so much focus we regulated no 2 as an Air Pollutant 50 years sometimes it can lead to no 2 levels in the home that would be illegal if it was outside. I know this concern its new its in the news but weve been talking about no 2 exposures outdoors and regulated that 50 years now the attention is coming on these indoor exposures happening. Something important what to do . What can we do about this . I think its practical pragmatic, feasible, affordable to rip it out now, simple things, make your exhaust hood is on vented to the outdoors, or crack the window open, thats when your exposure is highest. When the time comes, next time you have to make a purchase, think about or definitely get an electric stove or Induction Stove. Until then, ventilate to keep exposures low is there a no 2 minority one can have in their home to detect levels now. You could but thats on the science instrument ashen side, i dont think its something you have to be thinking about, worrying about every night, we can make better decisions Going Forward and new Building Stock and i agree with these laws that are kind of limiting hookups, but in the interim, switch to a better product, electric or Induction Stove and before that ventilate a little better. Every stove should have an exhaust hood over it vented to the outside turn it on when you cook. Im also thinking about those renting or dont have the ability to make those purchases and choices i hope everyone is alleging between the as well, important to hear the perspective, joe allen, thank you so much. Theres good news to report between the. Damar hamlin is out of the hospital today. After now ten days and two separate hospital, Buffalo Bills player damar hamlin is finally home between the discharged this morning from a buffalo Medical Center, its remarkable considering it was just last monday he suffered Cardiac Arrest on the field. Bills coach said it will be up to hamlin to decide when he returns to the team. Well leave it up to him, his health is first and foremost on our mind as far as his situation goes. Then when he feels ready, you know, we welcome him back as he feels ready. Joining me former nfl player Marcus Smith The Second and cnn sports analyst Christine Brent good to have you here, it was a different circumstance, hoping he would come home, be better, a lot of things but you heard the bills coach talking about the player and i wonder do you believe that there really is this shift about prioritizing the players, about prioritizing its his decision, because so often because the way the contracts are written, sometimes theres an incentive for players to play hurt. Right. Yeah. I think there is a shift with the nfl. I think theyre pushing for this Mental Health thing, and i really appreciate that, because its the work that you do as a life coach but i truly feel like theyre pushing more for Mental Health because we as players feel that we need that as a Mental Health in same, in nfl. I really truly believe we need that in the nfl. Its important talking about Mental Health as opposed to physical health, players on field and many who were watching and now still are reeling about what they saw and its impacted how they feel about the sport, about their confidence and playing, and you really cant play if your reluctant to or nervous about getting hurt. You, so when you get hurt, you cant really play like how you want to most people think that players have this, this Galaxy Warrior Type Mentality and we cant even have emotions, we cant even think about certain things, because were, were always thinking about the next play. Thats what we always have been taught. So the next play next play, if you notice, when you look at a football game, when a player gets hurt, they move the ball up and they resume the game. So when you look at all those things as well, its like well, the emotion side of it when are we really going to tap into our emotions . From experience, tapping into my emotions is speaking about what ive seen and what ive been through. And so thats how i think that we should kind of continue to move forward as the nfl and we need to continue to speak that as players, so we can really tap into our emotions and be better and healthier. Christine if this had happened 20, 30 years ago, sometimes you, even five years ago, would we be at that point where were talking about even tapping into that emotion or addressing the priority of those players absolutely not, what marked is saying such a step forward, i think the nfl is our most popular sport by far and in this way, its coming along with our culture, think back to the summer of 2021, the spring and summer, Naomi Sock Ka obviously was the first to bring up the issue of Mental Health and her struggles as she was, you know, was having leaving tournaments during the summer, the french open. Michael phelps, the great swimmer talked about, written a book, has had a documentary about his struggles with Mental Health. Its a great wonderful all power Michael Phelps can tell us that hes struggling, well, then the nfl can also say, hey, we got human beings here as you said marcus, we need to address this. And opting not to compete, which was really the next even horizon. You took the words out of my mouth, that same summer, phelps has been talking about this for awhile but you have naomi osaka within a month or two, couple months you have the simone biles story at the time that the world is watching, the Tokyo Olympics and she said i cant compete. It took these incredibly strong athletes world renown athletes and now the nfl is also dealing with this and saying hey, we, the athletes the Players Union has been strong on this, marcus speaking about this law and saying, we have to focus on the Mental Health of these giants who also by the way are human beings. And marcus on the point, this is also a business as much as its a sport and the phrase are you not entertained comes to mind. And theres a big dollar sign attached to the priorties that a league will make to figure out how best to market it and maybe that Gladiator Perception and persona is what sells tickets should there be a culture changes to look, theres even a market case for why its a good idea to focus on the whole player. When you think about the player you want him to be successful in every which way possible so if the league and the nfl wants the militaries to be successful, mentally, physically and spiritually they will do everything to get them the training, life coaches Mental Health they desire and the work that i continue to do and the work that i continue to push forward for them is you have players right, the players in a sense by one player, im going to say this, one player he was explaining why he was crying, right, he was explaining that and as men, why do we have to explain why we weep . We have to get to a point where were not explaining that and thats just us being men and thats what a real man looks like. As players, we have to take our manhood put it on the Football Field but also be human about it, and do it that way and i think if the nfl kind of looks at it that way, then i think it will be some changes and i think its going that way and i really appreciate that for them doing that. Quick, christine, does the Mighty Dollar dictate more for this league whats going to happen next. Certainly, yes, except i think theres also the public pressure and when you saw the coaches saying we cant keep, you know, playing this game, thats again something as you pointed out early would never have been said, maybe two, three years ago, certainly not five, ten years ago and this idea that the nfl player is much more than just this strong physical military, i think thats something that the nfl has to deal with, the nation the world is saying, you have to deal with Mental Health of these athletes. Really important points from all of you thank you so much. Well Supreme Court today allowing a New York State gun law that puts restrictions on carrying concealed firearms to remain in effect while legal challenge plays out in the appeals court. That as illinois governor signed Legislation Today introducing sweeping new measures that do everything from cap the sale of high capacity magazines to expanding the power of state courts to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. Joining me Cnn National Security annual juiliette key the Supreme Court struck down the concealed carry law knew being carried again how will it play out. The, they put a new law in place in effect following the Supreme Courts decision that number one, sort of restricts where folks can have firearms in sensitive locations, churches, schools, parks, so on, and number two, sets up a permanent scheme where in order to get a gun in the first place these are steps you have to go through, these are both a little bit controversial insofar as the Supreme Court cracked open the door last summer to saying, these things might work in some ways but were not going to tell you exactly whats going to be ok, this is going back to the Supreme Court, its hard to see how theres not going to be another legal fight over this Law Enforcement respect the idea theres a challenge the idea of not being able to ascertain a threat and understand and evaluate one, if everyone is able to conceal and carry, not be challenged that poses a threat. Law enforcement, the idea that Law Enforcement is sort of pro no Gun Restrictions is ridiculous, in other words, the Assault Rifle ban all supported by legitimate Police Organizations that understand that if youre in a restaurant, and you think one person has a gun and another person has a gun, and two people have concealed guns and there is an argument over a tip, that that is going to elevate relatively faster than something in which people will use words and argue, so this is, the amount of, the number of states with concealed weapon laws is historic in the number it is right now, so what youre seeing in terms of the counter, in new york, people are trying to figure out where is this middle elliot was talking about which the Supreme Court sort of left bread crumbs in terms of what it will had been but theres political sights on this, i dont want people to think because youll lose in court its over, part of what this is about is to keep pushing so that those who would defend, as they say those who do not support reasonable gun legislation, for example, red flag laws, Assault Rifle ban or things, are put on the defensive, thats what you want, because thats the only way well get movement im not talking about tomorrow, next month or year, youll get moving he five, ten, 15 years ago, this is the same strategy weve done with other social movements in this country because its not going to happen tomorrow there is expectation that the courts will be sort of the pan see of everything, they will solve everything and a challenge and will have no more gun related accidents, deaths, violent crimes, this week were talking about a 6yearold having access and shooting his first grade teacher, there is the pr component about this but theres the expectation of what we expect of the Supreme Court, is this the right way to go about this the devil in any of these things is in details, when you use a term like Assault Weapons ban as is the case in illinois now, how do you define what an Assault Weapon is . The supreme certainly isnt going to tell you what that is, illinois says if its a rifle that can be modified with a detachable magazine and has a pistol grip, 58 Different Things that might define what an Assault Weapon is, that might be legal it might not. The Supreme Court even in folks wanting to sort of paint them as overwhelmingly conserve, they left open a lot of ground as how to define all of these things and its actually a little bit chaotic right now in the state of the law as to what actually is going to survive and whats not. Again, certainly theres the idealogical of the current Supreme Court not going to win on any of that but its an open area of law that hasnt been decided yet. I think its not clearer than it was six months ago. I think one way to look at this as someone who doesnt think about it in the legal context but in terms of Public Safety and keeping children safer part of this litigation, part of what youre seeing the governors do or mayor or the restrictions youre seeing put in place is to begin a conversation again about what it means to be a gun owner and reasonable Gun Ownership so at the same time this is happening, we now have two cases against parents, who clearly knew their children should not have access to guns, and helped their children get access to guns and ultimately resulted in deaths. Thats good. Right .
