capitol hill. chad? neil, this is the longest speaker election since 1923. the house is now taking the ninth vote for speaker. it must go to a tenth. the goal was for kevin mccarthy to move the dial today. patrick mchenry of north carolina says the speaker s race won t be resolved today. mccorr think supporters are staring down their opponents. i don t believe kevin mccarthy will back down. we ll do this for days, do this for weeks. it could go months. we can t back down to 20 people holding the rest of the house captive or hostage. there s starting to be questions as to whether or not mccarthy can ever get the votes to become speaker. some gop members are beginning to negotiate with democrats. those that oppose mccarthy embrace the house vote a rama. it s not dysfunction and it s not imperilling.
where does this go? right now we re still in that stasis. the problem that they see right now on the house floor is that the meter has never moved for kevin mccarthy whatsoever. they re going to close this vote in just a couple moments here, this is the ninth vote. we will go to a tenth vote, this is the longest speaker election since 1923 and then you have to go back to 1833 where it took ten votes. he s not going to win on the ninth ballot. there s ban development here. ken buck, republican of colorado, i just spoke to him. he was traveling to a medical appointment in colorado. he won t be here till tomorrow. so this starts to change the universe. we ve been at this universe of 434 members elect voting. it went down to 433 yesterday when victoria spartz began to
