My name is elizabeth, and im the executive director here at the Woodrow Wilson house and its my pleasure to welcome you to the first of a series of speaking events that were going to have on suffrage. So the wilson house, if you havent been here before, its part of the National Trust for historic preservation. Wilson and his wife edith lived in this house and they turned edith turned it over to the National Trust in 1961 upon her death and it has been lovingly cared for and so we welcome you tonight. I wanted to tell you a little bit about how we started this suffrage speaker series. Asantewa boakyewa, our senior manager of collections and interpretations, said to me this summer when i first started the job, there is a commission on the suffrage and i think we should go to that meeting. Its the womens Suffrage Centennial commission. And i said, okay, im going to go with you. And so we went down to the library of congress and we sat at a big table and there were a
The movement dates from 1848 when a convention to consider the rights of women was held in new york. The committee adopting the list of womens wrongs found grievances against the government of men to be the same number that american had had against king george, it took George Washington six years to rectify mens grievances by law, but it took 72 years to establish womens rights by law. At least 1,000 legal amendments were necessary and every one was a struggle against ignorant opposition. Woman suffrage is a long story of hard work and heartache crowned by victory. Im going to show you around the rightfully hers exhibition today which is at the lawrence f. Bryan gallery. Before we head into the gallery, i want to talk about this particular that is out in the lobby in front of the entrance. It has a photograph of the 1913 womens suffrage march. Looking a pennsylvania avenue towards the United States capital. It is overlaid with a photograph from the 2017 womens march from pennsylvania avenue as well. What it was is a lenticular, which has a special effect so that as you walk by, the image changes between the two and we really wanted to have it in the exhibit to help grab the publics attention and also to signal that this is a historic exhibit but one that continues to have contemporary relevance today. Morning. Host lets talk about the significance of this week, august 16, 1920, and the key role it played in the 19th amendment. Guest yes, in august of 1920, 30 five states had ratified the 19th but the 36th state was elusive. There w according to the constitution, three fourths number of states had to ratify to make the 19th amendment part of the constitution. Really the last battle came down to tennessee here and there was not another obvious state that could ratify the 19 amendment. If women were going to have the right to vote in the 1920 election, it came down to tennessee. And one keysee vote. This is the headline from the washington post. A mothers letter, a sons choice. Portrait caricatures took on a martial air with all the military heroes who were portrayed. But it sent many to the field, like the soldier artists. Artists like Winslow Homer went to the field to do sketches for the weekly newspapers and evolved into very successful artists. But in terms of what it did to landscaping, it totally revolutionized the romantic attitude artists had toward this socalled american eden, the pristine landscape of the americas.
