On june 4th, 1919, the 19th amendment was passed and sent to the states for ratification. The sufferagists used the white house as a backdrop to challenge inequity and bring attention to the cause and tonight we look forward to hearing more about their successful efforts to secure womens rights to vote. Marking the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Fog today our new exhibit for american women and the right to vote opened upstairs and the brian gallery. This is a cornerstone of our centennial celebration of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. The 19th amendment is rightfully celebrated as a major mild milestone made possible by decades of suffragists from Political Engagement a critical piece of the larger story of womens battle for the vote. Rightfully hers, begins with the suffrage, the struggle for suffrage that does not end with the 19th amendments ratification. Yes, in august of 1920, 35 states had ratified the 19th but the 36th state was elusive. Thatwere 36 states at time. According to the constitution, there was a three fourths number of states that had to ratify to make the 19th amendment part of the constitution. American artifacts, Beverly Brannan tells the stories about the collection and photographers. Beverly we are in the center vault of the prints and photographs division of the library of congress. The library has a collection of color photographs from the 1930s and 1940s. They started as an experiment with color film. Kodak was just putting its color film in the market. Sent it out to photographers at institutions to give it a try, to see if they could create a market for it. The pictures were free. So they were appealing to newspapers, magazines, publishing agencies, book publishers. I was familiar already with the black and white photographs. There are about 171,000 Farm Security administration and office of war information blackandwhite photographs. And i had been working with those for a few years. There was not much emphasis placed on the color transparencies, because they were hard to handle. They were unique items. Only one of each. At the time, in the 1970s, it was really diffic
