MARSHALL Â The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed how area schools operate but the challenges they’re facing now go beyond technology.
A group of southwest Minnesota school superintendents said they’ve seen the pandemic take a toll on both students’ and teachers’ mental health.
“It’s been a great year, but it’s been a tough year,” said Ryan Nielsen, superintendent of Canby Public Schools. Although teachers and students were able to adapt to the changes, Nielsen said he’s worried it will be hard to retain and recruit teachers after the past year.
Representatives from the Southwest West Central Service Cooperative and the Canby, Murray County Central and Windom School Districts spoke with U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar in a Friday conference call.Â

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development hosted a roundtable-style meeting Wednesday to discuss health care.
Minnesota health care employers, educators, organizations and employees were all present in this meeting, held via Microsoft Teams to talk about the Minnesota economy and health care employment opportunities. Some leaders in these groups shared what they are doing to help promote employment in the health care field.
“The challenges in front of us from a workforce perspective are too big for any single organization or nonprofit or agency to tackle alone so those partnerships and when I think of those I think of the apprenticeship program,” said Brent Bultema, senior director of talent solutions at CentraCare.
