Petro poroshenko was sworn in this morning as the countrys 5th president , becoming the youngest president since ukraine became independent from russia. Poroshenko won the may 25th election with more than half the vote, making him the very first candidate to do so since 1991. Meanwhile, heavy fighting continued in the east as Government Forces stepped up their assault on prorussian fighters. Poroshenko is scheduled to hold peace talks with an envoy from Vladimir Putin today. Both men met briefly at fridays d day commenrations in france and pledged to Work Together to end the violence. Is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. Good afternoon. I am tori campbell. There was a strong show of support this morning for teachers in oakland. Many are upset over a new teacher contract that includes a strict morality clause. Ktvus alex s has more on alex savage has more on a demonstration put on by parents. The band played this morning, dozens of parents and students lined the entrance to the high school in oakland standing up for teachers who were asked to sign a morality clause to keep their jobs. Protesters say they have the right to keep their private lives private. A nonissue. The point is to edgeicate our educate our students. [ music ] [ indiscernible ] reporter new language inserted into the contracts requiring teachers to adhere to Catholic Church teachings in their private lives. Several teachers refused to sign the contract and wont be back next year. Lot of the teachers who are leaving are the best teachers at this school. There seems to have been a lull thursday and things got bad thursday night. Potentially could be getting a whole loss worse in the coming hours. Any hope of a ceasefire seems to be dashed, at least for now, after a very serious escalation of this conflict. Right now israel is launching powerful air strikes on gaza city and other targets inside gaza. Overnight 70 sites were targeted. Among them, home of a senior hamas leader, a Radio Station run by militant group and gazas ministry of finance. Israel is now warning of a prolonged ground war in gaza as the death toll on both sides continues to climb. Martin savidge is with me here in jerusalem.
