we begin with hints of a new olive branch toward iran. straight from the inner sanctum of the president s war council. that is james jones sitting next to the president in the white house situation room today. he left the high level meeting and came right over here to our situation room for an exclusive interview. we spoke at length about the war in iraq as well as the iranian nuclear threat and the fate of those american hikers being held by tehran. we begin with the possibility of direct u.s. talks with the ahmadinejad regime or military action. let s talk about iran. if the sanctions don t work, and i don t know if there s a year left, two years before iran has a nuclear military capability, is the u.s. ready, the obama administration, to take military action to stop iran from having a nuclear bomb? well, i m not going to speculate on that. i will simply say that what we ve achieved, i think, quite successfully, is three levels of sanctions that frankly very few peop
on the american psyche. seems like something here has resonated with the people and that s kind of amazing. you going to lose your job? more than likely. well, forget captain solly. this gay, america s newest aviation hero. wear your admiration on any tum of t-shirts sporting phrases like free steven slater or i slide for slater, and no wonder people are looking for an out. latest yearly survey shows only 45% of americans are happy in their jobs. that number the lowest level it s been since the conference board research group began asking that question some 22 years ago. but with 30 million of us and counting either unemployed or underemployed, there is little option. you take your own emergency chute, and guess what? when you reach the bottom, you ve got no job, no income, and if you re like most americans still on the hook for an underwater mortgage, jacked up credit card rates, student loans that chase you everywhere you go, and all of it brought to you by your fri
street journal poll tells us something we probably already knew. americans are fed up with everybody, both parties included, but it also told us something we didn t know, that the democrats may have figured out a way to push back a little bit and maybe cut their losses. and there are those in the gop who are having second thoughts about some in their party who want to change the 14th amendment. they are looking at long-term damage to the party with hispanic voters and are saying enough already. also, so-called the professional left is still seething over robert gibbs outburst yesterday. is the white house alienating its base? a hero on the left, congressman anthony weiner, joins us later, and wait until you see the ad that former vice president dan quayle s son ben quayle shot attacking president obama. he calls him the worst president ever, and that ad lands in the sideshow, but let s start with the big story from the primaries. newsweek s howard fineman is an msnbc po
with those big primary results, where two of the biggest winners are a woman who made her name in the world of wrestling and an appointed senator who won the right to defend his seat again in november. to help us break it all down, i m joined by cnbc s chief washington correspondent, john harwood in philadelphia today, where he had big interviews with the senate competitors there. first, let s talk about the races that have already taken place and michael bennet in colorado giving no props to the president who helped him win. reporter: i m sorry, andrea, you waiting for sound? no, i m waiting for you, john! reporter: okay, i m ready to go. michael bennet had a big win what did you think about the way he cast the president s support? this was sort of overstated as barack obama versus bill clinton. the president did campaign for michael bennet and bennet is not giving him much credit. reporter: well, any candidate is going to want to say i didn t win because of that
spending, and tax increases coming from washington. it is suffocating our small businesses and it is killing our jobs. the direction i will leave us they are taking us is not only threatening our well-being but the well-being of the next generations to come. the answer is not a bigger government, it is smaller government. the answer is not another billion dollars in stimulus spending, it is less spending. the answer is taught higher taxes on job creators, it is lower taxes. the great communicator ronald reagan had it right. this president and as congress had it wrong. that path which they are leading us is not working, and folks, i get it. i understand that experience because i have lived it. i understand the impact that higher taxes, increased regulation, and the continuing uncertainty the small businesses are trying to work within today, and i am understand how that is negatively impacting them. they re trying to keep their doors opening and having a difficult time of it.
