destroying the country and aired out grievances on everything from mitch mcconnell to afghanistan, blah, blah, blah blah blah. it was big talk and bluster from a man who took a devastating loss this thursday when the actual president joe biden formally blocked the former guy from claiming executive privilege over documents, the january 6th committee says it wants on trump s insurrection day activities. still, trump is demanding his allies suspend like steve bannon, he wants them to defy the committee suspense. now the committee is daring trump s legal team to mess around and find out. warning that defiance could mean criminal contempt referrals and maybe even jail time for those who refuse to comply. it s the kind of unprecedented legal showdown whose outcome will very well determine the strength of our democracy. this is a standoff like we ve never seen before. joining me to talk about it is a member of the house judiciary committee colorado congressman
have been taking in family members or strangers. they understand what s happening in the homelands of these individuals who are seeking asylum in the united states. so there is a sensitivity on the part of the population, but we re not seeing that on the part of the governor. and i don t think that people really understand just having an ounce of humanity for the humanitarian crisis. that s what it is. and you have people boarding planes from they haven t been to haiti in years and they re dropped off in the country. my colleague was just there. i want you to take a listen to some of the interviews he did while he was there. some areas already like war zone. you don t go there anymore. it s a war zone? it s really a war zone. and the united states is sending folks back to a war zone. what kind of impact will this have when it comes to voting? because next year mid terms, you know, the haitian population is quite a hefty voting block in florida. exactly.
afford to have rent, then we ve got to spend the money in order to deal with the housing crisis in america. and this includes homelessness. i don t see how we can absolutely have a reconciliation act, nor can we have infrastructure act without considering that housing is infrastructure. and it is central to our economy. so i m fighting very hard to hold onto and to save the work that we have done in my committee in order to support real housing in this country. and you know, i have to say a lot of civil rights groups are in your corner. they ve talked about housing as a way for equality. particularly for communities of color. this is why it baffles me that people who have never been a victim of institutional racism or systemic white supremacy don t seem to understand this concept. take a listen to your senator, or your colleague in the senate joe manchin to hear his views on
not just the people of color unable to make it to the ballot box or when they do, their vote is diluted in some way. the harm sometimes is expressive. it s a statement from the state government that we don t care about your voices. and we want to make sure you know that. i see that as part of the point sometimes. and i think that s what s going on in texas. they know this map wouldn t survive a voting rights act challenge, but it s expressing the will of the state that some people belong in the political community and some don t. as you notice, this is not the first time this has happened. this is a long-standing problem in the united states politics. it s the tamarit for me. the people who built this country to say we don t care about your participation in this process. it s exhausting and enraging at the same time. thank you so much michael and doug for joining us for a complicated conversation on gerrymandering. you ll have to come back. up next, some of america s biggest compan
to bet not only does january 6th committee die but perhaps the filibuster dice as well and then it s you know a freefall or our democracy. so what s your message to voters as we go into mid-terms? well, my message is simple. the 2020 election could very well be one of the most consequential elections in the modern history of our country, in that it is very important to get out to vote and ensure that we elect candidates who care about the rule of law, who care about maintaining our country as the constitutional republic and i think that as you said at the very outset of the program, democracy really is at stake. and just really quickly before i let you go, i have been asking members of congress whoa had the privilege of sharing the screen this question him, how is it working on the hill, you have to run into folks and work alongside congresswoman mpd and congressman andy biggs, all the
