AIUDF shifts candidates to Congress-ruled Rajasthan

On Friday, the AIUDF shifted some 19 of its candidates to Rajasthan. “There is a threat of poaching of candidates, so we decided to shift them. These people will be there till results are declared,” a senior AIUDF leader told ET, requesting not to be named.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which is part of the Congress-led alliance in Assam, has shifted its candidates to Congress-ruled Rajasthan over fears that rival parties will try to influence its legislators.
Assam’s three-phase Assembly election ended on April 6. Results will be declared on May 2. Another partner of the Mahajhot (grand alliance), the Bodoland People s Front (BPF), has asked 11 of its candidates to assemble in Kokrajhar.
NEW DELHI: The Congress-AIUDF alliance in Assam has reportedly shifted some of its candidates to Jaipur as a precautionary measure. Several AIUDF candidates for Assam Assembly polls shifted to Jaipur today. A few more Congress candidates will also be shifted to Jaipur shortly, arrangements made at Fairmount Hotel, ANI reported quoting its sources in the Congress. It s a precautionary measure taken up by the Mahajot alliance, they further said.
The Mahajot alliance s decision to shift the candidates comes within days of Congress-ally Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) candidate from Tamulpur, Rangja Khungur Basumatary, joining the BJP ahead of the third phase of poll in Assam.

Recently, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate from Tamulpur, Rangja Khungur Basumatary alias Ram Das, announced that he was joining the BJP.

BPF chief Hangrama Mohilary addressed a rally in Tamulpur on Friday without the presence of the candidate and said the party “will continue to fight the polls”.
Political parties in Assam are already contemplating on how to protect their elected candidates from poaching by rival camps after the polls.

The Election Commission turned down the plea made by the BPF and the Congress to postpone the polling in Tamulpur constituency of Assam.

GUWAHATI: The Election Commission on Sunday turned down the plea made by the BPF and the Congress to postpone the polling in Tamulpur constituency of Assam after Bodoland People s Front BPF candidate Rangja Khungur Basumatary joined the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP, ahead of the poll day.
The Congress party and the BPF has earlier demanded the suspension of the polls in the constituency after the BPF candidate switched parties.
