Leader of Ulster Unionist Party announces resignation

Ulster Unionist leader Steve Aiken has announced his resignation but will remain in his position until his successor is chosen. The announcement from South Antrim Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) comes amid the party’s growing concern over his leadership. Aiken wrote in a letter to party chairman Dermot Kennedy that he believed he has done all he can for the party. “May I say what a privilege it has been to lead our party in these difficult and trying times; while leadership of a political party has many highs and lows, it has been my work with our elected representatives, in particular our MLA team, that has given me the greatest confidence for the future of our great party,” his letter wrote.

Irish media commission to focus on online abuse of women politicians, journalists

The Irish parliament has proposed legislation that would establish a new media commission. The proposed body would see staff transferred from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and establish an Online Safety Commissioner tasked with the regulation of social media platforms with a focus on the online abuse of female politicians and journalists. “We take note of the targeting of journalists and politicians and women journalists and politicians in particular,” said the BAI’s deputy chief executive, Celine Craig. “This draft law envisages that the era of self-regulation is over and there will be a requirement for platforms to be accountable to the independent regulator,” she added.
