To find out more on this issue we are joined by EURACTIV’s Paula Kenny.

Irish non-Erasmus students returning home will not have quarantine costs covered

With a €1 million plan, the Irish government will only be footing the bill for Irish Erasmus students having to go into mandatory hotel quarantine, leaving non-Erasmus students out of the plan. The Irish state is expected to pay hotel quarantine bills for students taking part in the Erasmus programme on the basis that the government funds all such programmes, including travel and some additional costs. Higher Education Minister Simon Harris, who spoke on Claire Byrne Live on RTE Radio 1, said there is a waiver for an upfront payment of hotel quarantine fees that can be granted on “compassionate grounds” by the foreign affairs department. Harris also said he was in talks with Foreign Minister Simon Coveney, seeking to extend the waiver to those students.

Irish PM calls on EU, UK to work together over growing tension in Northern Ireland

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin has called on the EU and the UK to work together to overcome the mounting tension over the Northern Ireland protocol that has sparked nightly rioting and some of the worst violence Northern Ireland has seen in years.  “EU and UK dialogue is needed,” Martin told Northern Ireland leaders, noting that “that’s very much where it’s at. Ireland is willing to help in any way we can.” Regarding the clashes in the north, Martin also said he had “appraised Brussels of the sensitivities.” “Everyone is on the one page to stop the violence, reduce tensions and avoid any escalation,” he added.
