Desmond Means named superintendent of Wauwatosa School District

Wauwatosa School District s new superintendent Demond Means says he s anxious to begin serving the community Evan Casey, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Demond Means was named the new superintendent of the Wauwatosa School District Thursday. He was one of three finalists for the job.  Means has an extensive background in school administration and leadership. In a statement sent to Now News Group, he said it was a true honor to be selected by the Wauwatosa School Board.  I am looking forward to partnering with the school board, staff, and community to raise achievement for all students, Means said. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to share my passion for implementing educational equity practices through effective instruction, inclusive school cultures and transparent relationships.

The Cedarburg School Board has decided to keep its mask policy in place with one small change for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, after a lengthy public debate April 27.  After a lengthy public debate Tuesday, the board voted, 6-0, to keep the mask policy in place while modifying it to say masks are optional outside of school buildings.  The meeting itself ran over five hours.

Tony Evers announced Thursday that up to $420 million will be used to award small business with $5,000 grants. Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday he will pour $420 million into small businesses through the Wisconsin Tomorrow Small Business Recovery Grant program.  Evers made the announcement at The Ruby Tap, a wine bar and shop in Wauwatosa. According to a news release, the funds provided by the American Rescue Plan Act can potentially benefit 84,000 small businesses that generate between $10,000 and $7 million in annual revenue.

Elm Grove village president results: Neil Palmer wins re-election

Neil Palmer will continue on as Elm Grove s village president, after beating Mary Inden in Tuesday s election.  Palmer, who has been on the village board since 1991, has been village president since 2005. He ll remain in that position until 2023, having won another two-year term. I want to thank those who supported my re-election and those who supported my opponent for being involved, Palmer said in a statement after the results were available.  Elm Grove is a great place to live, and it can be even better if we agree that even if we have differences on details we all want the best for Elm Grove, he added.

South Milwaukee spring election results: Backes, Navarro win seats

Backes said he wants to refurbish or rehabilitate the Sunrise Plaza which he called a blighted property riddles with empty and poorly-maintained storefronts. I’m also very interested in the former Everbrite property, Backes said. It’s not often a large chunk of lakefront real estate opens up. It could be a unique opportunity to reimagine what that portion of the city looks like. Navarro, who has 16 years of experience as an alderman, also expressed interest in focusing on the Everbrite property on the east side of District 2. He said the company has been vacating the buildings and Mayor Erik Brooks is keeping an open dialog with Everbrite to determine what the options will be.
