And the suspects vehicle came down the driveway, rammed several of the patrol cars. One of the deputies fired at least one shot at the suspect car. The suspect vehicle continued down the roadway. Subsequently crashed. Reporter at that point, they say they issued a shelter in place order for the residents in what is a heavily wooded neighborhood. Telling them to stay inside and to lock their doors. The Sheriffs Emergency Response Team with assistance from many other Law Enforcement agencies then moved in, and after a search that lasted several hours, the suspect was found and arrested. No injuries were reported. In some of the commotion, though, another man was actually detained but it turned out he was simply a neighbor who was witness to the incident and subsequently released. Fire in san jose is not the work of a serial arsonist who struck at least five times over the weekend. They say this fire started when someone dropped a cigarette on a porch. The people who lived there put the fire out before crews could etch arrive. It was a nice break for san jose firefighters who had to deal with 13 suspicious fires near downtown san jose in less than a week. All the fires were set between 2 00 and 6 00 in the morning, including five this weekend. Police released this sketch of someone they say is a person of interest in this case. He is described as a white or hispanic man between 25 and 40. Hes at least six feet tall. Weighs about 170 pounds. He also wears large frame glasses. The firefighters tell us they were relieved the arsonist did not strike again and that neighborhood vigilance may have helped keep him at bay. Good evening and thanks for joining us. Im diane dwyer. A serial arsonist is on the loose in the south bay. There have been ten fires in less than a week, all in downtown san jose. Police are hoping a new 10,000 reward will make the difference. Kimberly terry is at the scene of the latest fire with more for us. Reporter Authorities Say they have grave concerns for Public Safety and also for the firefighters who are risking their lives to fight this rash of suspicious fires which have been moving fast, growing very quickly. The 10,000 reward is being offered by the San Jose Firefighters Union for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Neighbors who live on east st. John and 17th woke up just before 4 30 this morning to massive flames. I went to the back and i came outside and there was a fire in the back. So i came over here right away and tried to get them out. Reporter a couple in their 70s were inside sleeping but escaped unharmed.
