The family of Mike McKelvey is still grieving the 31-year-oldâs sudden death in an avalanche in February, but theyâve found a way to honor his memory.
In a GoFundMe page created by McKelveyâs family, they wrote a tribute to him, saying they are raising money to help start a scholarship in his name that will provide someone a course in backcountry safety.
The family is also planning litter pick-up events â something McKelvey practiced any time he was spending time outside.
âThose of you who traveled with Mike will remember that he never went out in nature without garbage bags in his pocket so that he could leave these beautiful places better than he found them,â the page states. âHe believed that if we all took a few important steps, we could make a meaningful difference.â
