Nepal-led faction calls Standing Committee meeting as Oli agrees to revive party committees prior to the unification with Maoist My Republica
KATHMANDU, June 7 The Madhav Kumar Nepal-led faction of the ruling CPN-UML has called a Standing Committee meeting today to discuss the six-point unity proposal put forth by the party Chairman K P Oli, who is also the prime minister, to save the party unity.
The meeting is being held after Oli expressed his commitment to revive all party committees that existed before the unification between the UML and CPN (Maoist Center) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal on May 16, 2018. This was one of the key demands put forth by the Nepal-led faction, which has already started final preparations to split the party, to keep party unity intact.
Nepal s Oli-led Cabinet suffers setback as SC annuls reappointment of 7 ministers ANI | Updated: May 20, 2021 21:57 IST
Kathmandu [Nepal], May 20 (ANI): In a major blow to KP Sharma Oli-led administration, the Supreme Court on Thursday annulled the re-appointment of seven ministers in the Prime Minister s cabinet.
A single bench of Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana delivered the verdict, terming the move of PM Oli to continue seven ministers (former Maoist Center leaders) as ministers to be against the constitution.
CJ Rana maintained that the re-appointment of ministers who are no longer members of either of the house has failed to follow Article 78 of the constitution. The article in the Constitution states that a person who is not a member of federal parliament can be minister for only six months.
Kathmandu, May 20
This turned out to be a bad day for Ram Bahadur Thapa, a former Maoist leader who has recently joined the ruling CPN-UML.
Hours after he lost the position of the Minister for Home Affairs due to a Supreme Court order, Thapa lost his effort to secure a National Assembly seat.
In the election held on Thursday, he lost the battle to the opposition alliance’s Khim Lal Devkota, according to the results announced in the late afternoon.
Devkota secured 5,088 votes against 4,014 of Thapa.
The UML apparently had a majority in the electorate comprising of Provincial Assembly members and chiefs and deputies of the local governments of the Bagmati province. However, he could not win the poll as the voters of the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led faction of the party voted against him.
