The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 5,644 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease in Illinois, including 30 additional deaths. Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,758,146 cases, including 26,190 deaths, in Illinois. As of Wednesday night, 1,340 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Masking in school was again a sticking point for some parents at the Fairfield District 112 Board of Education meeting last night. Three parents spoke in favor of opposing the governor's mask mandate, with some saying due process has not been followed for some students placed on quarantine and into remote learning. No action on the matter was taken. The Edwards County Board of Education met last night. Superintendent David Cowger presented the newly proposed tax levy, which called for a four percent increase. He said that does not necessarily mean tax payments will be higher, just that the levy is set at that amount. The board will vote on the matter at its meeting next month. In other action, the board heard the district has been awarded a $49,000 grant to put new furniture in the district libraries. The City of Fairfield and Wayne County Board are working to address issues at the Wayne County Humane Society and have formed a task force to work on restoring service. Mayor Mike Dreith tabbed Alderman Tyler Lampley for the group, and County Board Chairman Bruce Reeves will nominate Amy Pollard. Officials say they are worried about the future of the Humane Society shelter on the city's south side; Mayor Dreith says they appreciate the society's service, but they have a personnel problem, which prevents law enforcement from dropping off dogs and cats. 42-year-old Cisne resident Tammy J. Surprenant was arrested by Wayne County deputies Tuesday night after a drug investigation. Surprenant was charged with delivery of methamphetamine and was taken to the Wayne County Jail, pending the setting and posting of bond.
