Laura Elliott
It’s now been a year since I began this weekly column. I am grateful for the opportunity. When I suggested the idea to Jean Ann Miller, our tireless editor, she readily embraced it. The idea was based on a radio show that I used to host in Asheville, NC, called Wild Heart. I interviewed people in the community, inviting them to share their stories their dreams and challenges, their way of life.
As with this column, it was a weekly endeavor. It kept me on task, finding a guest for each show. Only once, did someone not show up. I’d had a funny feeling before I left for the station that day and so grabbed my binder of poetry in case I might need it.
Mason follows the green lights in life
Laura Elliott
One of my favorite lines is, “We make the path by walking it.” It summarizes a poem by Anthony Machado, an early 20th century Spanish poet. I recently had conversation with someone that does just that… by way of green lights.
When I met up with Jacob Mason of Lincoln, IL, he was excited to be interviewed. “Usually, I’m the one doing the interviewing,” he said. Jacob captures stories through film creating videos for weddings, families, businesses, and real estate.
Videography is just one of many things that he does. For someone as young as he is, in his late 20s, Jacob has worn a lot of hats. His path has been made by moving on the ‘green lights’ a concept he recently came upon in a book called Green Lights, by Matthew McConaughey.
Gossett is shaped by those that care
Laura Elliott
Life is continually showing us the need for care and respect for each other, and all things great and small. We are wired to care. It makes a difference when we do. Those that feel cared for by another are well and truly blessed… and are hopefully inspired to pass it along.
I had a delightful conversation with long-time community member, Bill Gossett, who has been doing just that passing it along. Much has been written about Bill over the years reporting on his good works and accomplishments, of which there have been many. Just last November, on Veteran’s Day, he was honored with a Doctorate of Humane Letters at Lincoln College.
The Spirit of Diversity found in Father Jeff Laible
Laura Elliott
Sometimes when gathering the stories of those in our community, there is such an abundance of rich thought and anecdote that it’s hard to fit it all into these 1,000 plus words. My conversation with Fr Jeff Laible was one such time.
I met with Fr Laible at his office at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lincoln, IL, where he serves as pastor there as well as the other Catholic churches in Logan County. He is also a military chaplain and a lover of cooking. This much I knew, and was delighted in discovering more of his story.

The white female rioter who stole House Speaker
Nancy Pelosi’s laptop with intentions to sell it to Russian intelligence has been released via house arrest. This is the epitome of white privilege. More inside….
If you watch certain channels or find yourself in certain parts of the Internet, one would believe there’s no such thing as white privilege. People type how it s just a figment of certain people s imagination IN CAPS all day, everyday. Yet, it often rears its ugly head in headlines and stories that detail just how white privilege works.
Here’s, yet, another example of white privilege in action.
