Resolutions during a pandemic

Laura Elliott The making of new year resolutions has been a ritual for some 4,000 years. The Babylonians are said to have been the first to do so and also the first recorded to hold new year celebrations. Back then, the new year began in mid-March, instead of January, when the crops were planted. Spring has always made more sense to me for a new beginning, and was the case for a long while until circa 46 BC when Julius Caesar came along and established January 1st as the new year. More fascinating facts on the past can easily be found if you care to dig a little further.

Traditions passed through the generations

Traditions passed through the generations Laura Elliott Memories of Christmas  One of the beautiful things about Christmas is the traditions new and old that get passed along through the generations. Memories are created with each passing year. I checked in with a few folks I’ve interviewed over the past year to invite their reflections on Christmas personal meanings and memories that they may have. For Eileen Mullins, owner of Sir Renna Tea in downtown Lincoln, Christmas is a time for family and feast. Being centrally located, Eileen hosts the gathering, with children and relatives arriving from Chicago, St Louis, and beyond. It is a time to eat, play games, and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Laura Elliott: Making a difference

Laura Elliott Making a difference in the world is the heartfelt passion of many. However, we all make a difference, not just out in the world, but in our own lives with every thought, word, and move we make for good or ill. Every moment we have the choice to live in love or fear, to share or keep to ourselves, to eat well or poorly, to exercise or not. Angela Stoltzenburg of Lincoln is making a difference through her passion for community health. As director of Community Health Collaborative (CHC) for the ALMH (Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital) Foundation, Angela is essentially encouraging people to make healthy choices.
