It was during the season of the traditional song, dance and feasting at tribal village Zari in Ranchi district of Chota Nagpur (now Gumla district of Jharkhand) that a son was born to Mariam and Julius Ekka on December 27, 1942. Ekkas, the devout Christian couple, named the child Albert. Like most Adivasis, Albert was at ease in the art of tracking and was a good marksman with the bow and arrow. And he was also exceptionally good in the game of hockey. During one of the district tournaments, Subedar Major Bhagirath Soren of 7th Bihar spotted Albert and got him enrolled in his battalion.

December 16, celebrated as Vijay Diwas, heralded the beginning of Swarnim Vijay Varsha. The Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1996 were not only low key but also confined to the Eastern Command. It is heartening to see that we seem to be gathering the confidence to commemorate our wars and victories.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Liberation War victory, the Border Security Force (BSF) organised a wreath laying ceremony at the Liberation War Memorial at the Bharat-Bangladesh Maitri Uddyan Park, Chottakhola, in south Tripura.
Lt. Gen. Kunhiraman Palat Candeth has been in command of Indian Army’s Western division during the Liberation War. He commanded the Indian Army in the states of Rajasthan, Punjab and Kashmir where large tank battles took place. These battle were challenging since Pakistan had the American Patton tanks, far superior to the Indian variants. However, Indian skill and training won out against better equipment, as Pakistan lost most battles and a lot more tanks compared to India.
Rameshwar Nath Kao was the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s intelligence-gathering service. He is known as the architect of Bangladesh’s liberation from Pakistan. The agency, led by him, retrieved valuable information about Pakistan’s armed forces during the 1971 War which proved a great aid in Indian and Mukti Bahini military operations.
