Students at hoover elementary checked their teacher assignments and hurried to class. Its the first day of school for Oakland Unified School districts 34,000 students on 77 campuses citywide. Students, parents and teachers say theyre feeling hopeful about the year ahead. We safety just making sure that theyre safe at school. Theyre getting good education. Theres been a lot of improvements and were also hoping that with the raise that a lot of teachers that we will be able to recruit really excellent teachers o usd teachers will start the year with a new contra act and a raise after a ten day long teacher strike in may this year.
