Some new video tonight from the Historic Town of lahaina this morning. It shows just how destructive the fires were. There were homes engulfed in flames. The man who took this video says he lost everything. This is the latest information we know on this friday morning. At least 55 people are dead. But that number is expected to rise. A majority of those deaths are in lahaina, where the wildfire is now 80 contained. Governor of hawaii says a big focus right now is finding shelter for those that had to evacuate. He says 2000 rooms are needed and encouraging the community to open up their homes to any survivors. More than 1000 structures have been destroyed across the island, and the governor walked through lahaina to see the devastation firsthand and says this is the worst Natural Disaster in hawaiis history. Its a heartbreaking day, without a doubt. What weve seen today has been catastrophic. But we tell you there is going to be a team effort to bring our state back. What we saw was the utter devastation of. Right now, theres no water, no power on the west side of the island. Search and rescue crews are moving into lahaina to look for survivors and any additional victims. California is one of several states sending First Responders to hawaii to help with the rescue, the relief and recovery efforts. 13 red cross workers leaving san jose and another group is scheduled to leave early this morning. Among those workers is the red cross. Central coast ceo michelle avril. By midday to day, shell be on the ground in maui working as a government liaison to get information help those most in need that our hearts go out to. Everyone has been affected by these tragic wildfires and just ensure that we are going to be there providing immediate needs, sheltering food, hydration, if there are medications that are needed. And we just ask for the support of our donors and our Community Members as Governor Newsom announced the deploy of californias urban search and rescue task force to maui, close to a dozen members are from the Oakland Fire Department who will provide vital support. A Task Force Team could be deployed to hawaii for up to three weeks and while some airlines are adding flights to get people off the island of maui, many flights to maui have been canceled because of this emergency. Live look at sfo this morning. Its one of the airports managing cancellations or rerouting flights from that island. United airlines canceled all passenger flights to kahului airport. Instead, it is now sending empty planes to maui so it can be used to bring passengers back to the mainland. A few people who landed at sfo have evacuated are still in shock. Devastation saddens this. Yesterday i cried all day. Its just its really bad. It was crazy. And then we made to the airport and 30 plus hours later we finally got home. Have you got the Evacuation Order . So in the five minutes we put everything in our bags and leave and then we saw the smoke. The maui airport was packed with people yesterday trying to leave the island. Hawaii state officials are discouraging nonessential travel to the island right now. Many airlines are allowing people who had plans to travel to the island this week to reschedule without paying any extra fees. Right now, cell service, other Communications Still wiped out nearly hina and Officials Say the outages could last days if not weeks. This is making it very difficult for people trying to find loved ones. One woman in maui has put together a spreadsheet to help out it lists the status of people in the hina area. The president of the San Francisco board of supervisors says city will likely file a rehearing after the California Public Utilities Commission voted to expand driverless taxi service in the city. Aaron peskin says the vote is just the beginning. Its not the end and that vote came after six hours of very heated public comment. Many people argue Companies Like waymo and cruise are not ready to expand their services. But others argue Driverless Cars are safer than cars with human beings behind the wheel. On thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission passed two resolutions voting 3 to 1 on each to allow more driverless taxi rides in San Francisco, cruz and waymo will now have the ability to expand driverless rides around the city. This is an incremental approval. It builds on existing approvals and its not the last action the cpuc or the dmv will be taking in regulating these vehicles. Commissioner genevieve sharon was the only person to vote against expanding driverless car rides, citing opposition from First Responders who have expressed safety concerns. First responders say self driving cars have interfered with their jobs nearly 70 times since 2022. One woman says she doesnt believe selfdriving technology has advanced enough for more use on busy streets. The greater problem is that the cars dont recognize unusual situations. And like a lot of people said today, theyre still learning. Still supporters believe driverless car rides will create more safety on the roads and even save lives. The facility has a history of fires in urge schnitzer steel to work closely with regulatory agencies such as the air district and also health and safety agencies. So that this does not happen again. And the bay area air quality district hit schnitzel steel with two violations for the fire at their facility.
