Oakland School Campus and the challenges facing the district. Everybody know your class is at. If you need help, come on over. Students at hoover elementary checked their teacher assignments and hurried to class. Its the first day of school for Oakland Unified School districts 34,000 students on 77 campuses citywide. Students, parents and teachers say theyre feeling hopeful about the year ahead. We safety just making sure that theyre safe at school. Theyre getting good education. Theres been a lot of improvements and were also hoping that with the raise that a lot of teachers that we will be able to recruit really excellent teachers o usd teachers will start the year with a new contra act and a raise after a ten day long teacher strike in may this year. First time teachers will earn about 10,000 more than they did last year. Im feeling really hopeful because just this last week with the new staff, we seem to get off on a really good start. Everyone seems really excited and even with that increased salary, osd is having a hard time recruiting. Theyre starting the year with 65 vacant teacher positions. Were also keeping in mind, you know, the fact that we are in a pretty significant Staffing Shortage as a field and education. Weve been making contingency plans all throughout the summer and dissipating that we would have some schools where we wouldnt have the teacher present the first day. We also asked the superintendent about declining enrollment. A budget document from the districts chief Business Officer earlier this year said the district estimates a nearly 11 drop in Elementary School enrollment this year compared to the 2018 2019 school year. We are doing okay. Most urban School Districts across the nation, actually not just california, are down. Birth rates in general are trending down. The cost of living right now is a huge barrier, and one of the reasons why families are moving out of the bay area, in some cases out of the state. And so were looking at the things that we can control and trying to be as aggressive as possible about that. Some of the things the superintendent says they can control are improvements to facilities and school grounds. Hoover elementary this year got a new coat of paint for the start of the school year. And as you can see behind us, the students here are enjoying this playground. It is brand new for them to enjoy this school year in oakland. Allie rasmus, ktvu fox two news. All right. Lets talk weather at 1217. And it was hot this weekend, rosemary. We were watching those temperatures all weekend and they just kind of cruised on into monday with us. Yes we are continuing with the hot weather, claudine, although we are expected to come in for the second part of the afternoon, a little bit cooler than where we were yesterday afternoon, giving you a live look here into San Francisco where, wow, a beautiful weekend in San Francisco. Even at the coast yesterday, mostly blue skies and a lot of folks out there enjoying the beach. Heres a look at the Storm Tracker two. We have just a very weak onshore breeze at this time. This is going to strengthen in the coming days. And the marine layer is going to deepen as well, becoming a little bit more widespread by tonight and into tomorrow. Look at the winds very light and variable in most areas. Oakland reporting a northwest breeze at 13mph. We have fairfield reporting just a light breeze at three miles per hour. Look at the 25 temperature change. Some of us are a little bit cooler, but most of us a little bit warmer. Livermore up by six degrees at this time compared to yesterday. San jose by nine. So when we get the afternoon heat, the day before, it kind of carries over into the next day usually and thats what were seeing today. But we do expect again, a little bit of the onshore breeze to turn on a bit more today, as well as those low clouds expected to develop. 75 degrees right now in the city of San Francisco. So a beautiful lunchtime there. Low 80s and napa already 90 degrees for you. Novato as we move over towards the inland east bay, its 92 over areas of brentwood. So when we get into the low 90s during the lunch hour we could easily see another 5 to 10 degrees warming as we get into the second part of the day. Alamo right now 94 as well as lafayette checking in at 95. Heres a look at the futurecast low clouds along the coastline. A patchy drizzle expected by this evening. And then as you take a look inside the bay, we are beginning to see some of that cloud cover. Didnt see much of that last night. And then tomorrow morning, definitely more widespread with the clouds. And that again, is going to help to bring things down. Heres a look at the temperatures yesterday compared to what we are expecting for today. So still very, very warm and hot inland, but not quite as bad as yesterday. Yesterday concord hit 102. Today, youre expected to go to 97. Santa rosa, 99 yesterday. Today, youre expected to go to 94. Heres a better look at some of the afternoon highs for today along the peninsula, 88 in redwood city and for our hotter spots inland, antioch, youre going to 98. So still flirting with the century mark. Hard to call that a cooldown, obviously, but even better for tomorrow. And ill have a look at the extended forecast coming up. Us officials are sounding the alarm after a new provocation from two of americas Top National Security threats. Experts say it marks a significant escalation in what theyre doing here is intimidation and harassment. 11 ships, theyve never done anything like this before. Obviously, we picked that up right away with our aircraft. The drills triggering a response from the us military, including four destroyers and a p8 poseidon aircraft which shadowed the chinese and russian fleet until it left the area. Others are calling on the us to accelerate the socalled economic decoupling with china, claiming america is too reliant on chinese companies. When we talk about decoupling, it has to be selective. It has to be strategic. We have to identify the sectors that are critical to American National security. But councilman Mike Barnicle says there just arent enough officers to respond. I dont believe we have enough police staffing. And with events like last night, we see that we truly have an issue here. Hes already had meetings with city leaders to try to figure out how they can get these sideshows under control. He says one option is bringing in chp. We have no traffic unit right now. We need to make sure that we have enforcement of traffic laws to keep the residents driving on our roadways safe and maybe even getting help from the Sheriffs Office to fill in on patrols and engineers are also looking into installing raised rubber pieces in the parking lot to prevent drivers from spinning their tires. And theyre looking into possibly passing a spectator ordinance. But i want that soon where we can hold people accountable because without a group out there watching these sideshows, you dont have a sideshow. Meanwhile residents and visitors feared the danger will just continue. Its just terrible out here. I dont feel safe. Were moving eventually next year to get away from all this. A beautiful weekend in the city and along the coastline. It was pretty nice, too. Meanwhile our inland cities have been baking. We will begin to see some changes come our way. Watching a couple of things. We have this trough here that will be deepening over the state and that is going to bring temperatures down slightly today. But even more comfortable for tomorrow. Were also watching Tropical Storm eugene. It is weakening, but could see some of that moisture pull into southern california. Looks like by about midweek, we may see a few mid high level clouds, but the thunderstorm activity could actually be over areas like san diego. Giving you a look here at the futurecast into thursday. And youll notice some of that blue there coming in from this direction. Outside of that, we do have the cooldown coming and we are looking at temperatures very comfortable inland. Heres a look at the track for eugene. It is going to take a little bit of a curve towards areas like baja, california, southern california. But again, it is weakening. Well be a Tropical Storm later today and then weakening to a depression as we get into the days ahead. May while in and around the bay area , we do have temperatures quite hot once again, especially inland, 95 degrees in walnut creek in the north bay, 90 degrees in novato, 75, San Francisco. Some areas not filling the cooldown just yet or at least the transition because many areas are even a little bit warmer right now compared to yesterday into the afternoon. Were going to be well above average, 94 expected for santa rosa, 7 to 8 in oakland, 97 in livermore 97 in livermore today. But areas like concord and livermore got above 100 degrees yesterday. So there is some improvement out there. 72 San Francisco for today, 80 for the peninsula. If you go into the as game later today, its going to be nice at the coliseum. Partly cloudy skies, 72 degrees west breeze to 15mph. And there is a look at your extended forecast where again, with each passing day, it becomes just a little bit more bearable in liim back into the upper 80s for wednesday, thursday, friday, upper 70s for our bayside communities and then fairly nice for the weekend. Not much change going on. All right. Hard to complain about that. Yes. All right. Thanks, rosemary. Sure. Lets talk hawaii. Hawaiis Tourism Bureau is reportedly focusing on getting visitors from the bay area to come on over. More and more people in california appear ready to move to the Central Valley. A new study conducted by the state department of finance found many californians are making plans to move away from their current homes and urban and coastal areas. And the Central Valleys population is expected to grow by 5 Million People by the year 2060. The Research Found many of those people ready to move to the Central Valley currently live here in the bay area. Many of them have found that rather than saying having an expensive apartment in the bay area or a house with a postage stamp for a yard, they could move up the interstate 80 corridor and come up to san in the region or the foothills and get a more affordable place to live or a larger place to live. Well, the Research Found the cost of living is the main reason why so many california residents are now looking to move to the Central Valley.
