Wicked Local Boston Acton resident, community leader, author, and elected member of the Acton-Boxborough Regional School Committee, Kyra Wilson Cook, received the Black Excellence on Beacon Hill Award from the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus on Friday, Feb. 26 during their annual celebration held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. Over 350 students from R J Grey sign letter condemning racism

Wicked Local Over 350 students from R.J. Grey Junior High School signed a letter written by two fellow students to show both support for School Committee members targeted in virtual racist attacks and to also take a firm stand against racism within the Acton-Boxborough community. Eighth-graders Sara Karp and Sneha Iyer, both of Acton, wrote the letter to show their support and gratitude to School Committee members Kyra Wilson Cook and Evelyn Abayaah-Issah, who were the targets of racist remarks during two virtual School Committee meetings on Dec. 17 and on Jan. 7. The two friends felt the second incident did not garner as much attention as the first and they didn t want people to forget about what happened.

What began as one Boxborough family s gesture to show support to a friend targeted by racism has quickly blossomed into an impressive display of solidarity in Acton and Boxborough. Luce said she responded the same way she did a few years prior when Abayaah-Issah s daughter received a racist note in her school locker. Luce reached out by phone, dropped off something at the family s home, and expressed how terrible she felt. But after the second racial attack occurred during a Jan. 7 School Committee meeting, Luce was unsure what to do to let her friend know she cared and supported her.
