Say hello everybody. applause in december 1965 mary beth and john tinker along with their friend Chris Eckhart wore black bands to school to protest the war in vietnam they were sent home and suspended from school. The students were told they couldnt return to school until they agreed to end their protest. Through their parents, the Students School sued the School District for violating their right to free expression. Culminated in the Supreme Court decision 15 years ago on february 24th, 1960, nine the court ruled seven to two that students do not shed their Constit

Tonights case is tinker versus Des Moines Independent Community School District. In this 1969 case, a court in a seven to two decision ruled that students First Amendment rights to free speech are still protected even when they are at school. For the next 90 minutes, we will learn more about the history of this case

The ways in which we think about and live under the constitution are reflected in the courts interpretations in both their Historical Context and their legacies.
