that report you mentioned that the pent gone put out saying pentagon put out saying there was low confidence with hamid karzai and violence was up. a key policy person at the pentagon says she s cautiously optimistic and we re head anything the right direction, jon. jon: what about karzai s visit, the timing of it? i mean, what s at stake? reporter: well, it s huge. essentially, things have been rough between washington and afghan president hamid karzai. when u.s. officials were putting pressure on karzai, he joked at one point he was considering joining the taliban. a lot of people are saying his visit here to washington is huge in terms of rebuilding confidence with the american public and also with u.s. officials. and so a lot of people will be watching that visit to look at the body language, to hear what he says and also what his u.s. counterparts have to say while he s here in washington, jon. jon: mike emanuel at the pentagon, thanks. jane: we re watching breaking news out o
he never went there with the intent to do her harm or to kill her, but to confront her over something. i think you ll likely see this was a break-up situation where he went there perhaps an altercation broke out between the two of them, and then the next thing was that it went too far, and she was killed. trying to bring this case into a manslaughter type of situation, the defense will say there was no premeditation, there was no deliberation, but this was a heat of passion type of killing. jane: so the best you can do is get a lower charge? well, that s certainly what they re going to focus on now. obviously, this was a very bad crime scene. there s consciousness of guilt, taking the computer. the computer does hold a lot of evidence as to any prior threats. that goes to premeditation, so the defense is going to have to carefully look at that evidence. jane: nicole, as shannon referenced there, there may be some crucial evidence on that computer, potentially death threats? absolut
these two could certainly be relevant, and, you know, i think that it s really bigger than whether or not he had specifically the intent to kill, but the question is really did he have the intent to harm? i think the defense is going to have a really tough sell in this case on that issue because we have a door that got kicked in, we have a confession or a statement, if you will, wherein he s telling the police that he shook her violently and her head was banging against the wall. you know, certainly that was not an accident, the way he s describing it, and i think what the defense has got is a really tough case. jane: steven, what about this prior arrest that he had on another campus where shannon described with the police officer that said he was unlike any college kid she d ever seen before and had to handle. could that in some way help his defense, that he has some sort of emotional issues or problems in the past? well, certainly you re going to want to look at his mental health i
pretty much has ramped up the numbers of dogs they ve put in place and deployed. reporter: thank you very much, larry colbert with the international police work dog association, they re here this week, working specifically on explosives, they have teams from canada, bermuda, all across the county. we saw ava work with the county, and she s doing a beautiful job. jane: molly, thanks. jon: the federal government is saying ingredients used by johnson & johnson in some 40 children s medications were contaminated with bacteria, the company issued a voluntary recall for the liquid medications on friday. now a new fda report lists more than 20 problems found at the place where those drugs were bottled. here now, dpoks business network s jenna lee. bigger problems than we first thought. reporter: much bigger. we talked about quality control and this report is pretty specific about some of the issues at this plant. it includes dust and grime on machines, duct tape around important pipes, a
from not just 08 when of course president obama was on the ticket and really boosted democratic turnout but also from previous years. a sign that energy on the democratic side is probably going to remain somewhat anemic in what is likely to be a rough year for them in 2010. jane: carl cameron in indiana, thanks. jon: new details about the murder that has shocked the university of virginia. the accused lacrosse player, admitting to police he slammed his former girlfriend s head against the wall, but he didn t mean to kill her. so how will prosecutors move ahead with this case? plus, we are hearing the times square terror suspect is singing to the feds like a canary, but how will he be treated in the legal system? tried as an enemy combatant or as a u.s. citizen? judge andrew napolitano thing as taking a chance?
