situation right outside of los angeles. now, in downtown los angeles reports this morning of a suspicious briefcase found. right near the library, fifth and flower, the bomb squad is on the way to check that out, so we ll keep you posted. jon: rick, thank you. jane: as congress takes up immigration reform, a lot of people argue they should really tackle border security fist. the obama administration is touting some gains in tightening our border with mexico. there are still, though, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who cross it every single year. william la jeunesse is in yuma, arizona. william? reporter: well, jane, you re right. senate democrats are pushing a proposal to provide amnesty to the 11 million illegal americans living in the country. republicans are going to insist on border security first. problem is, it doesn t have much meaning.
there s a connection here, and that s why people are looking at greece as an example of what could happen. jon: doesn t sound good. jane: jenna, thank you. jon: senior pentagon officials testifying on capitol hill right now on the security and stability situation in afghanistan. this hearing ahead of next week s visit to washington by afghan president hamid karzai. less than a week after the release of a pentagon report saying violence in afghanistan has soared over the past six months while support for the karzai-led government is hitting rock bottom levels there. mike emanuel s got more from the pentagon. any major headlines coming out of this hearing, mike? reporter: in front of the house armed services committee we heard a key policy adviser to the pentagon saying she s cautiously optimistic about the way forward in afghanistan, that we are on the right past path, that we are on the right track. a somewhat rosy assessment after
purpose. jon: congressman, thank you. jane: want to take you to the white house where robert gibbs is talking about the suspect in the times square incident. let s take a listen. there are many, many mechanisms that would allow you to prevent somebody from flying which is what happened in this case. the cbp takes a locked manifest that s required to be filed 30 minutes before a flight with people that are on the plane. that was checked against that list, and the individual was removed from the plane. are there consequences for an airline that doesn t keep someone who is on a no-fly list off an airplane? i would point you to dhs on that. i don t know the specifics on that. yes, sir. two questions. one on the court and one on the oil spill. on the supreme court, can you tell us how the meeting went this morning? i don t have a readout on the
breaking it up and giving it that rusty orange look. it s kind of odd because we re so conditioned to see oil in that, in that gooky thick, black state that we saw in exxon exxon valdez. that s not the case with this oil slick, but it could hit land anytime in the next 3-5 days. jane: when we talk about this containment dome, what else is being attempted? reporter: it should be in place sometime in the next 24-48 hours. you also alluded to the fact they have capped off one of the three leaks. they used the robotic submarines, they actually sliced off a chunk of the pipe and capped it with a valve. on top of that today they re starting to burn the oil again. they re using these fire booms, and what they do is they corral 500-1,000 barrels of oil, they light it on fire, and these booms are effective enough to burn 1800 barrels of oil an hour. that s 75,000 gallons.
