With Clear Lake level rising to more than 8 feet on the Rumsey Gauge a number of fishermen and boaters are wondering what kind of spring and summer we will have. There is no question that a full lake will improve the bass, crappie and catfish fishing. The tules will be flooded and the fish will see ideal spawning conditions. You can bet the bass fishermen will be working the pockets back in the tules with jigs and plastic worms. For the fish the conditions will be ideal for spawning and the overall population will see an increase. A full lake will also mean an increase in new growth of tules. Local residents have gotten used to seeing expensive bass boats racing across the lake. After all Clear Lake is rated the number 2 bass lake in the nation and draws dozens of high profile bass tournaments. The truth is that a lot of fishermen that visit Lake County and Clear Lake don’t own a boat. They either hire a guide or fish from shore. The good news is that there are options to be able to fish the lake and be successful. Buying a small boat, canoe or kayak or even using a float tube are just a few.
Without question Clear Lake is one of the more popular fishing lakes in the West and Lake County offers not only excellent fishing opportunities but hunting ones as well. The problem is that from all indications the number of fishermen and hunters throughout the state has been in a sharp decline. On any given day the parking lots at the ramps around the lake are virtually empty and that includes weekends. Even the number of fishermen that compete in the bass tournaments continue to decline. For example the tournament held on Saturday only drew 22 boats.
