After George Floyds death became a new movement and discussion about race in this country. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson and how the bay area is celebrating. Good morning. Reporter good morning. It was 155 years ago today that a group of slaves in texas received the news they were, in fact, free and had been for two years. It was on that day juneteenth was born and today its being celebrated with a renewed passion and several bay area organizations are marking the day with some celebrations and we have some information on that for you. At 1 00 today there will be a march and a rally at San Francisco city hall. The event runs until 3 00. Participants are asked to practice social distancing. Took a moment to pause, reflect, and really march toward change. And that march symbolically and physically will end here in front of city hall. Unions stopped for the entire first shift to honor juneteenth and what the day means for this nation and its people. But they took to the street. They started excuse me, they started at the port there in oakland ending at city hall to raise awareness about issues still plaguing the black community including Police Violence and systemic racism. Those who came out tell me today is really a long time coming. Weve been doing this since i was a kid. In San Francisco they had a big old park, we had rides. And then in the 90s it started dying down with the gang violence. Then they made it just one block. And, i mean, my friends and family are already celebrated. Why is this not celebrated more . Public transportation plays a Critical Role in the unfolding of this Health Crisis and in the unfolding of what will be likely a long economic crisis. Our job is to figure out how to steward our declining resources in order to therefore the services that essential workers need to have to get to work and in order to poise San Francisco for recovery, thats what were here for.
