They started excuse me, they started at the port there in oakland ending at city hall to raise awareness about issues still plaguing the black community including Police Violence and systemic racism. Those who came out tell me today is really a long time coming. Weve been doing this since i was a kid. In San Francisco they had a big old park, we had rides. And then in the 90s it started dying down with the gang violence. Then they made it just one block. And, i mean, my friends and family are already celebrated. Why is this not celebrated more . Reporter and in addition to some of those union workers, hundreds of their friends and families and other smaller organizations came out to hold signs and chant. And despite its recent highlight in a lot of peoples minds, juneteenth has actually been celebrated for more than 153 years. Many members of Community Gathering to remember a federal guard killed in oakland. The public and virtual memorial is being held at the pinoa high school theater. The officers sister is speaking in his memory. We wanted to make sure that my brothers death was not in vain and that we could take this atrocity and find something good in his death by focusing on his life. Officer Dave Patrick Underwood was killed last month in a driveby shooting while on duty. Air force Staff SergeantSteven Carrillo is accused of shooting him and targeting another officer. Carrillo and a second man traveled to oakland with the intent to kill police. Both suspects are also being connected to the shooting death of a Santa Cruz County sheriffs deputy. The bay areas road to recovery and reopening. This weekend will feature a different vibe in Alameda County which is easing more restrictions and allowing inperson shopping and outdoor dining. His mother says he was going into his third year at cal. Police say he was shot to death at close range. Smith died around 10 30 monday night on dwight way in the neighborhood where he lived. Smith had reportedly just gone out for a walk. Right now police say they have few clues to work with. Anyone with information is asked to give them a call. San Francisco Mayor london breed has paused Law Enforcement hiring to conduct a review for bias. The citys Human Resources department will handle the audit. Its expected to take three months. A federal judge issued the order yesterday. Flash bang grenades are banned also in protesters. But the judge does give officers to use latitude to protect people or property. Oakland layor is doubling down on her decision to investigate a rope hanging in a tree at lake merritt as a hate crime. Even though the man who put them up there claims the ropes were installed to attach a swing for people to enjoy. He hoped people would get more clarity before raising concerns. The offer said her message is clear and not an overreaction. There were five different trees where ropes were removed yesterday. She says that warehouse workers and long shoremen stopped work at the port for the entire first shift to honor juneteenth. She says that a lot of the people she talked to while it has been around for more than 150 years, they are pleased to see that it is getting its due. Happening today, the next phase of reopening in los angeles county, the latest list covers bars, wineries, breweries, tasting rooms, personal Care Services including nail salons and tattoo parlors. Yesterday the county announced more than 1,000 new covid19 cases. The total there is more than 78,000. The results are in from ucsfs mass testing in San Franciscos mission district. They say about 6 of residents were infected in late april or early may before the study took place. 2 were infected at the time of last months testing. And the majority of new infections were lowincome essential latino workers. Researchers say the ethnic and socioeconomic factors help point to why positive cases rose in the community during the citys shelter at home ordinance. The Supreme Court handed down two historic rulings this week, neither of which went over well in the white house.
