Historical Commission To Meet At Hill County Pioneer Home The Hill County Historical Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Hill County pioneer home of Drs. Jerry and Jana Burch in Brandon. In addition to regular business, members will hear a program on the home, located at 992 FM 1243. The home s history began in 1846, when Elisha Smith Wyman, a native of Maine who was recently affiliated with the United States Army, arrived in present-day Hill County with a 640-acre land grant from the State of Texas. The Wymans built a dog-trot cabin on the Old Government Road. This home still stands proudly as the oldest structure in Hill County and the home of Drs. Jerry and Jana Burch.

Commissioners Approve Plan To Regulate Game Rooms In Hill Co. The Hill County Commissioners Court held a public hearing Tuesday, May 11, before approving a game room order that will give the county the ability to regulate the facilities beginning this summer. While gambling is illegal in Texas, game rooms can operate under some exceptions if the machines are for entertainment purposes and give out winnings in prizes other than cash. During the public hearing, a patron of local game rooms and a game room operator both referenced cash prizes, leading County Judge Justin Lewis to warn them that they were making self-incriminating statements in the public forum.

Court Selects Contractor For Courthouse Repairs The Hill County Commissioners Court met in a special session Tuesday, April 20, and selected a contractor to make repairs to the Hill County Courthouse following February s winter storm. At the court s last meeting, commissioners opted to utilize pre-bid purchasing cooperatives approved by the state rather than extending the length of the project by seeking bids. A proposal from Basic IDIQ for $759,000 was approved by the court. The other proposal came from Belfor, which submitted a $1.13 million plan. The cost is expected to be covered by insurance. Reviewing other items placed on the special agenda, the court approved a $14,035.39 proposal to upgrade security cameras at the Waco Street Support Services Building and the county annex on Franklin Street.
