i m carol costello. the eastern seaboard bracing themselves for the worst of irene on this american morning. good morning, everyone. it is it s wednesday, wowp halfway through the week. august 24th. welcome to american morning. feels like it s halfway through the week. he had like a hundred years of news in two days. we started off yesterday with what was going on in libya, these hurricane preparations, and then an earthquake. right. did you feel it? christine and i were together working. i thought it was a little vertigo. i said, is that the subway? and we were with somebody who said the lights are swaying. yeah. this ligds grid was swaying. i did not feel it. i was in a shoe store buying shoes. you thought that s what it was. my husband is in baltimore, he really felt it. he e-mails me and says, get out of wherever you are. i m thinking, how does he know i m buying shoes. hopefully, gladly there are more stories of that sort. only something like

outright confusion. these are live pictures near moammar gadhafi s compound. there have been heavy battles raging around this building. carloads of people have been streaming out of the libyan capital. we want to bring in retired general james spider marks. if you could, tell us about what you are watching, what you are seeing. what do you make of the pictures? with the low level flying that is taking place, bombing gadhafi s compound? suzanne, what you see is obviously a representation of chaos and confusion on the ground. the fact that civilians are fleeing, coming out of tripoli should not be surprising. the rebels are about to force gadhafi s complete departure in some way. that may take hours, that may take days. we still could be a week or so away. but that type of confusion, of what happens next gets folks very, very nervous. they ve got the opportunity now to get out of town, and you re going to see them get out of town and let this thing settle out. i think you l

i m wolf blitzer. we are watching breaking news, history unfolding in libya. we are following breaking news. we will be in the hours ahead as developments continue. it is early monday morning there in libya. moammar gadhafi is under siege from rebel forces. the rebels say they have two of moammar gadhafi s sons captured. we have pictures of saif. the international criminal court at the hague has an arrest warrant for him. now we are told in the heart of tripoli s green square which they have renamed martyr s square. we heard moments ago that some of them are pushing back with word that gadhafi forces may be going to reenter that part of the city. the government has been saying 1,300 people have been killed over the past 12 hours. our people on the ground have seen no evidence of that though. one of our reporters with the rebels say there are no signs of pro government forces on the streets of tripoli at the moment. our colleague matthew chance is holed up in a hotel in
