communications director for the national republican congressional committee, matt gorman. tiffany, buttigieg has seen a number of good bumps over the course of the primary. bumps that frankly candidates like cory booker and kamala harris kind of wish they d been getting themselves. but he does have this huge deficit among african-american voters. can he overcome it? yeah, i think he can and i think it s interesting how we frame the conversation. i think the media still, you know, kind of uplifts buttigieg s campaign repeatedly even though the black vote s constituency path leads to the white house. it s odd we kind of dismiss kamala harris campaign because she has a ground swelling among some voters. not dismissing it, just not doing very well. not you personally but a lot of articles in print and broadcast all but dismissed her campaign. it s an interesting but i m curious, how do you think he can overcome it?
big, say in four or five months? yeah, so i think it s really dangerous to call people the front-runner when we re quite a bit a ways away from the first round of voting. i m always hesitant to use that phrase. listen, i think what we see about the top five candidates who are fund-raising well, you have to look at the amounts and the number of donors contributing. when you see people contributing $5 or $10, that s a vote. a lot of people maxing out, that s a check in the box. no matter what the outcome. when somebody s giving you 5 or 10 or $20, that s someone who supporting you and believe in your candidacy. i do find it fascinating, though, that, you know, mayor pete buttigieg, as we know, he struggled with communities of color, and i think a lot of his ground swelling that kicked off his campaign was a media incredibly lacking in diversity who was excited about his candidacy. you cannot be elected if you can t resonate with communities of color. mayor pete has definitely done
dreams. goose bumps. it was two messages, get out there so people can t mess with your vote, but get out there and vote. she delivered it with passion. as a preacher, i thought her delivery was spot on. we agree. same person, different speeches. i want to take you back to january 2018 when oprah delivered the time s up speech. that kicked off a lot of speculation about her power, he owns a network, she s a media mogul and she really knows how to rally the troops. i mean, she delivered a speech that gave me goose bumps. the last time i got goose bumps like that was my sermon last summer. your speech in 2004. we talk about that all the time. i mean, her delivery was amazing and i thought it gave such a ground swelling to this important movement. the interesting thing about this is when you look at all the polls, i know we re still early, but everybody s eager to talk about 2020. when you look at the two people who beat donald trump in the double digits are oprah and michell
is that new though? fox news has always kind of dangled this carrot in front of racists. i don t think so. fair. it was certainly a part of it. there was that element that was driving the conversation, but yok it was as overt. it s overt. it certainly you could say it was subtle before. it is not subtle now. creative about euphemisms back then, but they ve been emboldened to come out and say these things. they have a ground swelling of people echoing this throughout the community. i would agree with that. he has certainly drawn himself by the way, that was his first tweet about africa as president, that mentioned the word africa as president. thank you to my panel, lively discussion here. up ahead, something borrowed. -i ve seen lots of homes helping new customers
if he assaulted this young man, he should be charged. paris, what do you think? you made a good point, the question you asked is why is this happening right now? there s a hilarious movie called the election in where the candidate is doing crazy saying crazy things, doing crazy things. you don t think it s because of guy who s in office now has said horrible things about reporters and said reporters are the enemy of the american people? no, don. that has nothing to do with anything? that people feel they can get away with it? because i don t believe that you actually believe that. there s no way you can t there s no way you believe what you re saying if you don t think that s true. oh, he believes it. well, actually i didn t get a chance to say anything but i will tell you now what i think. that is that what we have right now is a ground swelling of people who are not being respectful, who are not acting civil and people who are just saying things why do you thi
