In earthquake country. It sounds like not much damage was done. That is great. It is a wakeup call literally and figuratively for all of us. We should be prepared. It wasnt a major earthquake and no reports of injuries or major damage, the middle of the night jolt was enough to get people talking about what they felt all morning long. Reporter a loud thump and a couple seconds of shaking. The earthquake this morning doesnt look that impressive on the nest camera inside of this oakland apartment but it was enough to startle people awake at 2 39 in the morning. It felt like a sharp jolt with a few shakes afterwards. I havent been able to go to sleep since. I felt the walkway shake. Like the metal on the walkway. You could hear rattling. Yeah. I dont know what to do yet. Drop and cover. Thats what i did. The sound was intense. Everybody was trying to make sure that they werent dreaming. It didnt seem but we live in california. Reporter the owner of dream plus donuts was already up and at
Much live from berkeley. We brought you an update from the usgs in menlo park and they said there has been one aftershock reported after the 4. 4 hit this morning. The geologist said the earthquake was relatively small but many people do not describe it as such. He said this could be a force shock of a larger earthquake and that is something agencies are on alert for in the coming days. More information coming throughout the morning. The impact on transit was minimal. Bart says there is no damage to any tracks after the earthquake. The first trains out of the gate were delayed as conductors moved slowly down the tracks as an extra precaution. They inspected the tracks and found no damage. Initially there was a 20 minute delay but things are back on track. This is the scene at the airport, the Train Service was shut down for a while. Trains were stopped inside of the terminal as crews inspected the tracks to make sure there was no damage from the earthquake. Runways were also checked. O
Feel the jolt and the back and forth shaking motion. And the number one reason reason is of course that it was shallow. But the second thing we look at is the shallow nature allows the primary and secondary energy waves to travel farther reaching more of the bay area. And thats why so many of us had the perceived notion that it was higher than 4. 4 magnitude. Lets look at the primary and secondary waves. Primary waves usually arrives first hence the name. This travels lieu rock and water. Thats what arrives in the big boom first experienced all the way down to san jose. We had reports of that. Secondary wave that only travels through rock and soil. But thats where you get the back and forth motion. We had reports of that from the north bay down to the south bay. Most of the bay area, bottom line, felt the p and s wave and due to the shallow nature. Now its simple to forget but always remember drop cover and hold. If you feel that big jolt first, the primary wave you may have time to se
But it did frazzle some nerves. It was just a quick jolt. And then it just kind of shook for a minute and that was it. I just waited for it to be over. Reporter the seismology lab, earthquake Early Warning system sounded the alert this morning but because the epicenter was in berkeley the warning time was limited. The farther seismic waves travel, the longer the warning. The earthquake was right under berkeley. People in oakland would get one or two seconds of warning. In San Francisco about three seconds. Reporter seismologists here say even a second or two of warning is much better than none. Even with just a second or two every warning, everybody gets under a sturdy table we estimate we can half the numbers of injuries in an earthquake so thats a big reduction in the impact. Reporter seismologists at the usgs say theres the chance of bigger earthquakes could be coming. Statistically, every time we have an earthquake in california, theres a low probability of a larger earthquake foll
His location reporter the classrooms of Downtown High school say its summer break. Even during the school year, students arent sitting at these tasks. Our classroom desks. Our classroom is the city of san francisco. Reporter students go on wilderness trips with the guidance of their teacher, ed kavanaugh. He has not just one of my teachers. He is such an outdoorsman and he is at home in this plan. We are worried about his medical state. Reporter thats because kavanaugh is insulindependent.
