The toll from extreme weather has devastated vast regions of sub-Saharan Africa which are suffering from the worst drought conditions on record and a food crisis that ranges from severe to catastrophic. Record-breaking drought continues to scorch wide swaths of sub-Saharan Africa, from Somalia in the east to Niger in the west. Humanitarian groups say tens of millions are hungry and conditions are being made even worse by the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indian nationals account for almost a quarter of all foreign students enrolled in Ukraine, with the majority of them studying medicine. India has long been called the world’s pharmacy as the largest producer of generic drugs as well as vaccines on the globe. A lot of that capacity was repurposed and increased to produce COVID vaccines, intended particularly for low-income countries. But demand has dwindled, creating a glut even as vast regions remain largely unvaccinated. Fred de Sam Lazaro reports from India.
