you understand that because it was two weeks ago when he was standing on the world stage saying hey, i got 200,000 troops at my border and the world needs to help. what should we be doing for ukraine now? because i have to tell you for people that don t wake up and read eight papers before the sunrise, it looks like the world is standing by watching as we watch putin lay waste to these cities where women and children and families live. you re absolutely right. it s a terrible situation. it s already a human tragedy unfolding and i think president biden specifically is tasked with a really almost impossible task and that is to help the people of ukraine, to support president zelenskyy but also to keep the u.s. and frankly, nato out of a war with russia. you know, this is a real challenge. we ve heard a lot about no fly zones, president zelenskyy asked the u.s. and nato and both refused. it s important to understand if we send combat troops while they re on the ground or within
fighter jet. and what happens then? whatever kind of no fly zone you declare trace, you have to then enforce that no fly zone and that quite literally means getting planes in the air and those planes are presumably at some point going to come into contact with russian aircraft and then you have the, the prospect of nato aircraft, whether those pilots, whether those planes have come out of poland, whether they are considered to have any connection to the u.s. you have them coming into contact with russian aircraft and the conflict could widen. so easily. that s the complexities of bringing in a no fly zone. it s as simple as that, right? yup. yup. so let me let me take on what s going to chat with you a little more about no fly zones. but let me bring in nile gardiner here. while nations have banded
time of war? that was discussed. i thought the president might say more in the speech, but clearly there was a split in the administration. we should go after russian energy. it should be sanctioned. we should rethink the balance between energy, security, and climate change policies. the good news is you can have energy security and responsible climate change policies. more broadly, joe, i think that was missed. i think we also missed the idea, perhaps, of telling the american people they would have to deal with higher energy prices for a while, if this is so important. that s a sacrifice the american people should be willing to make. we ve sacrificed in the past for our principles, for our national security. we should be prepared to do that now. i think that was there. look, these speeches have got to be educational. they can t just be laundry lists. i think the president missed the opportunity to say, here s why what we re doing is about right. here s why we re not doing more, why
who are flying on top of them. if you are you would do anything to make it stop. anything to protect your family. the political reality is that the first shot at russia could be the start of world war three. we keep moving the goalposts on this conflict. and talking about things that are more frightening on a wide scale. but if you live here in this country, you are desperate for the violence to stop. you do anything for this to stop. you heard this from the ukrainian president and the foreign minister here. what s vitally important, is he plead for the international community to provide planes to the ukraine. so that they could. there are no fly zones. we know that there been dogfights over the capitol. russian jets and ukrainian jets. neither side is controlling the airspace. that is hugely important as we move forward. even the foreign minister phrased it, how many children does the international community need to see die before they start to supply this country with the air power
these events unfold. a triggers this incredibly difficult question for us. for example, how much are we prepared to watch ukrainian suffer before we dare to intervene? and of course, these ideas of no fly zones. i mean, i want to protect ukrainians right now. i feel frustrated watching this unfold, terrified of the consequences for the ukrainians. but the fact that also the west has importance, means that the stakes are so high, we should risk war. and it would be for nothing. a and you mentioned blackmail, which is a good word. on the one hand, or seven in ukraine as a reminder of the dangers or nuclear weapons, how easy it is for one, mom vladimir putin, the blackmail us to possibly and life on planet earth. but on the other, hand is not also an incentive to smaller countries like iran or ukraine to get nuclear weapons in the future to protect themselves from the bigger nuclear armed powers like russia or like the
