republican party is triumphant. establishment wing has taken defeat after defeat. what s unknown is what impact support from the president will have for gop candidates in the november election. at a time when he is deeply unpopular with democratic voters and many independents are cool to him. chris stirewalt is cool today. fox news political editor. good morning to you. our colleague doug schoen checks a lot of boxes with that. i think the one statement that sticks out on what he writes there is that the establishment wing has taken defeat after defeat. go ahead and jump off on that first. i would maybe twist it a little bit and say this. there is a new establishment, right? the president, the chairwoman of the republican national committee, and an increasing number of nominees of the republican party are populist now. nationalist populist. the old model embraced free
market conservatism. this is trump ian populism and to some degree a call to personality around trump but it is trump s party. it s not the establishment wing is losing. there is a new establishment, the establishment is succeeding. bill: tim pawlenty is trying to revive his political career. he was beat by jeff johnson. pawlenty s comment the night of his defeat. the circumstances we live in in the era of a different kind of leadership in terms of president trump and the like. i just don t fit well into that era, into that picture. bill: he said it s the era of trump and i m not a trump-like politician. said a few others recently over the past two years. sandra: no offense to governor pawlenty. you have to feel bad for a guy who tried to go back one more time and face planted.
novemb november? might kobach be a republican nominee in a general election context? you mentioned michigan and missouri as well as kansas. we re looking at the ocasio-cortez/sanders wing of the democratic party. many challengers there pit them against the more establishment wing of the democratic party and we ll see if the energy is playing out the way it did in ocasio-cortez s wing in new york. the manafort trial continues, rick gates back on the stand this morning. how do you think this will play or seep into the political discourse in the coming weeks? it s a good question. the thing we re learning time and again is that the russia investigation overall or the manafort trial, it is not big talk on the campaign trail. what i think it does is it feeds the president s mood and that overall environment is having an impact. i don t think you ll see one
they are all politicians. i will say, it s certainly possible that one of them could end up being the nominee. at the end of the day, given where the democratic party is right now, it s very difficult for me to imagine that a business leader could potentially win, especially with the bernie wing being very anti-wall street. mike bloomberg could enter. they will find a lot of problems if they have connections to wall street. what about the more liberal in the bernie wing bernie right there in the middle at five. senator sanders i saw call him. elizabeth warren. kamal harris is writing a book. elizabeth warren is trying to beef up her foreign policy chops. biden is the establishment wing of the party. then the next four people harry and i have ranked are all
post and the other isn t, yeah, i m going with the other one. kavanaugh also privately criticized and said something really nasty about hillary clinton in private. he called her an expletive. i would think the president would like that. someone said they were digging that up in opposition research. i think that would give him a mark up with the president. i think the establishment wing of the party would love kavanaugh. i heard that name floated about a month ago when i was talking to one person close to mcconnell who said our ideal would be that we get kennedy to sit down this summer and get kavanaugh appointed. this is who the establishment would love. also, kavanaugh was one of those people added to the list when the white house updated and added five new names in november. that list they seemingly published out of nowhere. he was a clerk for justice anthony kennedy. it was definitely part of the kennedy keep thinking about retirement. see all these people we like. we
