good morning. in terms of who we know will and does have president-elect trump s ear. so we have reince priebus of the establishment wing, we have steve bannon of the alt right white nationalist wing and we have jared kushner of the family wing. how are these power plays going to play out? you missed one person. we have barack obama also whose ear, indeed, donald trump is attuned to as well. and i think we saw that in the meeting. the people i ve talked to say there s no question that the president had a real effect, a stunning effect on trump during that meeting in terms of imparting the seriousness and the weight of the presidency and what is expected of him in terms of being the president of all the people that is very different than the campaign. what we saw in the campaign and we re still going to see in this presidency are a different set of rules. trump rules. and that s what bannon represents.
you know this guy is going to go off on his own. he needs somebody tempramentally balanced with him. part of the rudy guiliani attack about the position is over the weekend there was a growing concern among civil rights and other organizations out there about the prospects of guiliani becoming attorney general, and sending signals into the transition team this would be a problem, and getting rudy guiliani out there in front quiets the noise, and particularly the new york area about the prospect. and the second thing, you are seeing what is going to be an ongoing struggle inside the administration. donald trump is trying to balance two very powerful interests. you have the establishment wing represented by the chief of staff, and reince priebus, and
she s not endorsed a candidate. she s seen as a possible vice presidential pick. what role might she play there tonight? reporter: well, this is her state, right? and she s very much in the spotlight in this huge political week with the state of the union this week, with tonight s republican debate, and then with the democratic debate. you call it a veiled dig, tamron. not so veiled. as you, nikki haley has confirmed that she was aiming at trump. she believes that the republican party needs to look in the mirror and face up to some of this. it has earned her some backlash from some on the conservative right, many in the establishment believe that haley and speaker ryan should be with the future of the gop, and it s, you know, going against sort of some of these ideas and these values that donald trump is proposing. trump, of course, mobilizing kind of this new base. these people that are coming in that haven t always necessarily been a part of the republican party. so i think the gov
trump responded to the new york values attack today. i embrace, look, new york we took a big hit with the world trade center. worst attack ever in the united states when you look at area. it s incredible what they ve rebuilt. when you knock new york, go through me. new york is an amazing place with amazing people. trump called the goldman sack loans cruz failed to report, quote, big thing that could come up tonight as well. but also be on the look jut for a fight between the establishment and outsiders and establishment themselves. after the tough reaction from some conservatives to governor nikki haley s state of the union response, it s clear the party might be more divided than ever. the fight in the establishment lane put rubio in the spotlight. he s fared well at debates and he gets small bumps in polling but then he stalls. he still is unable to totally break through. then you have the governors in the establishment wing, they seem to be ready to tear rubio down and each othe
marching to the nomination. this is in many ways a party we don t recognize. i wouldn t go so far to say they re talking about a third party, but talking about re-evaluating the identity of the republican party as we know it today. how much of her moves and what we see from her could be a push for her to be considered as vice president. there s a lot of talk about that. certainly has. she s not going to be donald trump s vice president after this. probably not. in many ways, this is a bet for her on establishment wing. this was crafted by paul ryan. there s an element of capitol hill and republicans working in that regard, but also her state, south carolina, has more tradition of annointing establishment nominee. there was an aberration in 2012, newt gingrich won south carolina, didn t win the nomination. otherwise, everyone they picked since ronald reagan went on to the white house. there s a republican contingent in south carolina, in addition
