Today, drivers began retrieving the vehicles theyd abandoned on the side of icy, jampacked roads. The governor took the heat for failing to prepare for the minor snow and ice storm that crippled the city. We have two reports from atlanta tonight. First mark strassman. Mark. And businesses rem reporter scott, major roads are open again but most schools and businesses remain closed. Two days after two inches of snow and ice paralyzed the city, georgias governor admitted he blew it. Abandoned their cars during atlantas storm reclaimed them today. Hundreds of residents have been forced from their homes. More than a dozen major fires are scorching the west, and teri okita is on the front lines of the socalled sherpa fire now howling through Santa Barbaras coastal canyons. Reporter fueled by the notorious sundowner winds, the exploded overnight, doubling in size to 4,000 acres. 90 degree temperatures in the canyons, combined with 50mile perhour winds, sent the fires whipping down mountains and on to the main highway, causing road closures and sending firemen to take cover. 400 people were evacuated. Hot, dry conditions, even tripledigit temperatures in some places, are fanning at least a dozen large fires. North of los angeles, Santa Barbara county is under a state of emergency. Reporter lighter winds allowed crews to perform burnout operations just north of Santa Barbara late friday night. Theyre trying to create a buffer zone between droughtdry brush andenned homes before the same strong winds that pushed flames on to californias main coastal highway earlier this week return.
