Many locations already in the low 20s. When you factor in the winds, this is how it feels outside. It feels about 10 in washington, 16 in college park, and a cold 6 degrees right now in dulles. Overall right now, temperatures today will be warmer than they have been. This is the system im tracking. As it pushes over the mountains, a lot of the snow will fall apart. Again, some scattered snow showers mainly later today. The area is dry right now. So heres what you can expect. Temperatures in the 30s today, some scattered snow, little but no accumulation. If you can expect snow coming up in a just over 10 minutes, angie. Thank you very much. More snow is headed to the region this weekend. This weekend, road crews are preparing for the Winter Weather. In the district, more than 200 trucks will treat the roads and neighborhood streets. The city is also reminding people to clear their sidewalks or risk getting a fine. In Prince Georges County, crews will monitor the roads and treat them as needed. The county is asking drivers to use caution because the road could be slick with a fresh dusting of that snow. And crews fixing water main breaks because theres been so many of them due to the Winter Weather. There have been 365 water main breaks in our area this month alone. A pipe on Rockville Pike burst yesterday morning near the white flint mall. Crews worked overnight to repair that pipe. And people affected by a water main break in alexandria should have Running Water this morning. Crews finished repairing the break that closed parts of duke and jordan streets. Police in Montgomery County are trying to figure out what led to this deadly crash. It happened at old georgetown road just off Rockville Pike. Were still working on getting the name of the person who was killed. A Montgomery County community is in mourning today as they try to wrap their heads around the death of a young teen. One of her friends is fighting for her life. Police say the girls accidentally crossed paths during a drag race. News 4 spoke with a family friend shortly after the accident. Covenant life pastor Joshua Harris mourns. A 15yearold student who goes to the churchs school died in this horrific crash near the church. Another student is in critical condition. Theyre precious girls, theyre loved by the School Community and our church community, and so there are a lot of people that are really mourning tonight. The teens were walking on the sidewalk after the school around 2 30. Suddenly, Police Say Two teenage drivers who may have been drag racing lost control, hit the girls and slammed into a tree. The teenage drivers and a passenger are okay. A friend of the victims broke down in tears at the scene. Students are heart broken. Its really sad. Police believe the possible drag race started at shady grove road and headed northbound. It has two lanes that merge into one at the top of the hill. Thats where investigators believe the cars collided. The victims pastor says the families cling to their faith. In the hope that we have as a Church Family because jesus came to conquer death, we have hope beyond the grave, and thats the hope these families are clinging to. Reporter news 4. This morning, we now know how a former senate aide facing child pornography charges died. Police say he hung himself in the basement of his parents home thursday. He was awaiting trial for possessing and distributing child pornography. He was the former chief of staff to tennessee senator lamar alexander. A suspected drunk driver charged with aggravated manslaughter in a deadly crash in arlington. We learn the man arrested has been in trouble for driving drunk before. He struck a Chrysler Crossfire with deadly force killing a 24yearold man. Driver of the striking vehicle headed eastbound on lee highway remained onscene and currently being interviewed by police department, individuals at the headquarters. Reporter news 4 has learned that the man has a long history of traffic offenses, including speeding and reckless driving. In 2012, he was convicted of dwi. New out of South Carolina, Police Arrested one man in connection with a deadly shooting at South CarolinaState University at a dorm there. Officers charged 19yearold Justin Singleton with murder early this morning. They believe he shot and killed 20yearold Brandon Robinson friday afternoon. Initially, it was believed that four gunmen were on the campus at the time, right now its not clear if police are looking for any more people. Today, u. S. Officials are speaking out about terror threats at the Winter Olympics. The details leaders are giving us now for people planning the trip. And why people are once again pointing fingers at the company believed to be at fault. And caught on camera, another dangerous case of someone too drunk to ride metro. A special session has been set for tuesday to discuss the changes. With less than two weeks until the start of the Winter Olympics in sochi. The state department issued a warning for those planning to attend the games. Americans are advised to be aware of their own personal safety. A rising threat. They recommend the 10,000 americans traveling to sochi for the games enroll in their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program which would alert you to any potential danger. In the day ahead, crews will resume their search for missing residents following a deadly fire at a home in canada. Police officers decided to let the search crews rest from the cold and frigid temperatures. Crews have been using steam to melt the ice that froze over the home. The fire broke out thursday in eastern quebec. The towns acting mayor says many of the residents were in wheelchairs or used walkers. Man is searching for his dog, stolen from his home in the district. Thieves took a 2 1 2yearold cockapu named margaret. Peterson says thieves stole a tv, two ipads, and a laptop, but this is all he wants back, little margo. Hes offering a 10,000 reward for margos safe return. A man waking up behind bars today. Police tracked him down at a metro station. Before he was arrested, officers helped to save his life. Prince georges county bureau chief Tracy Wilkins has a look at the dramatic footage that led to his arrest. Reporter a normal day at chevrolet metro quickly changed when this man came walking through the station stumbled off the platform and on to the tracks. He appears intoxicated as he stumbles dangerously close to the third rail. A train passes by on the opposite track. Then he falls again. People on the platform look on before deciding to engage. Reporter it was after passengers here standing on the platform got him off of the tracks and back on to the platform that police were called. And thats when this story takes another interesting turn. Turns out, the man who fell on to the tracks was actually wanted, Eric Henderson of buie has an outstanding warrant. Once his name was put into a data base, it was discovered he was wanted for failing to appear on a trespassing charge. But his wrap sheet showing a range of charges. His actions could have put not only himself but metro passengers in jeopardy. According to Prince Georges County fire and ems, henderson was transported to Prince Georges County with nonlife threatening head injuries. The expectation was for him to be held there until Sheriff Deputies could take him into custody. He was released before that could happen. While hes not considered a violent offender, he does have this outstanding warrant and they plan to serve it. News 4. While the metro fall you heard about led to an arrest, usually theyre just dangerous for you and the riders around at the time. The news 4 iteam brought this to public attention weeks ago. Happening today, metro will test a stretch of the new silver line in northern virginia. Tonight, crews will run trains. At the same time, metro will run the regular orange line service. The Airports Authority says its fixed a Software Glitch that delayed testing for several weeks. The first phase of the silver line connects the metro system to Tysons Corner in reston. And the second phase will expand the line to dulles and into loudon county. Metro crews are doing track work on all five lines. And you can expect some delays this weekend. On the green line, trains will run every 16 minutes, orange, blue and yellow line trains will run every 20 minutes and on the red line, trains could run as much as 24 minutes apart. More red line will run through downtown during the daytime and everything should be back to normal in time for monday mornings commute. Amelia here now to talk about the snow chances. How is it looking . Minimal snow chances. People are asking are we going to get a dusting or hit again . Just a dusting, maybe up to an inch in some areas. But the big weather headline this weekend, were getting a break from the frigid air. Temperatures today, well, theyll still be running below average, but our high yesterday was 24 degrees. Today, our high will be about 34 degrees. Satellite and radar right now tracking cloudy skies across the area. You can see in West Virginia snow there. As the snow continues to push eastward, a lot of it is just going to fall apart. By the time it tries to move into our area, most of us seeing the chance of some light snow. Temperatures this morning in the low 20s, a big improvement from yesterday morning when we were only in the single digits. 20 in rockville, 22 over in annapolis, 21 degrees this morning in leesburg and manassas, 22 down in warrenton. Heading out this morning, you need to dress warm, its cold outside but not dangerously cold like it has been for the last few mornings. Now, with future weather, here we are, 8 00 a. The chill starts to ease a little bit once we get into the latter part of next week around thursday, High Temperature of 35 degrees, friday High Temperature of 41. So, again, maybe some snow today, but i really think most people are going to be saying it is not so cold out here. Its not as cold as it has been. Its nice for those getting above freezing for sure. Some people call it crazy, others just call it cold. They plunge for charity at sandy point beach. Theres no running now because its a little icy and the ice will cut your legs. The Special Olympics fundraiser is an annual affair for many of these folks, but with snow on the ground and frigid temps in the air, this one was a little different. It could be enough for a light coating. We want to take a live look right now at union station. Not seeing much except for that wind blowing the flag around. And its actually going to be one of the warmest its been in days. Storm team 4 meteorologist amelia in for chuck. Yeah, for the last three days, temperatures have been frigid. And any snow chances today will be absolutely nothing like what we saw on tuesday. You can see on radar, theres light snow trying to make its way into the area. It will have difficulty getting here. Like you noted at union station, it was breezy outside, and its going to be breezy throughout the day today. The winds right now at 18 miles an hour in washington. And well continue to see winds throughout the day anywhere from about 10 to 25 miles an hour. When you factor in the winds, this is how it feels outside right now. So about 8 in frederick, 5 in gaithersburg, 7 in leesburg, feeling about 9 degrees. This snow tries to push eastward. Itll have difficulty, though, making it over the mountains. Best chance of snow today will be starting around 1 00 p. M. On into the evening hours. Ill be outlining whether you can expect snow in just over 10 minutes. And we are not the only ones dealing with the Winter Weather. The latest round affecting all 50 states including hawaii. At some point, every state has been below freezing. There are states of emergency in the south. Reporter the arctic blast dipped deep into texas with sleet and in houston, freezing rain that crippled the city. Its been slippery, a lot of crashes, people losing control. Despite warnings to stay off the roads, accidents topped 500 by late morning. The areas Emergency Center was activated. Its normally staffed only for hurricanes. Its a serious situation. You see all the traffic backed up one way. Overpasses like this one have been turned into sheets of ice. Its where hundreds of accidents have happened. Ice blanketed san antonio, and further east, baton rouge. Almost 700 flights were canceled, more than 2,000 delayed. In indiana, i94 reopened, 20 hours after whiteout conditions triggered a deadly crash of more than 40 vehicles. 18 of them semis. Three people died, more than 20 hurt. In blinding snow, the rescue took hours. With a crash scene like that, we had people that not only even the First Responders could get to. Reporter in several states, temperatures are single digits, including in new jersey where firefighters in union city were forced to battle a massive sixalarm blaze with frozen hydrants and nozzles. The deep freeze has sent Natural Gas Prices soaring. Used by almost half the nations households, its 50 higher than this time last year. Miguel ramirez is using space heaters and blankets to keep the thermostat down. Its our gas bill that will feel a little higher because of the heating in the home. The fight over life support rights is taking center stage this morning after a judge ruled on a pregnant womans life. The texas judge ordered a hospital to remove life support from a pregnant brain dead woman. The woman was found unconscious due to a blood clot in her brain when she was just 14 weeks pregnant. The womans husband told the court that in previous discussions, she said she would not want to be kept on life support for an extended amount of time. Texas wont remove life support from a pregnant woman unless court ordered. Today will be the first full day in office for jennifer wexton. The democrat was sworn in yesterday afternoon, her victory tuesday puts democrats one vote away from controlling the state senate. Next monday, well hear results of the recount in the other special election. That will determine the balance of power. And Bob Mcdonnell and his wife are maintaining their innocence. Yesterday, the two pleaded not guilty to corruption charges in court. Northern Virginia Bureau chief was in there in the courtroom when they did. And she said, the judge had strong words of his own for the media. Applause from well wishers as Bob Mcdonnell and wife maureen left federal court, their twa daughte two daughters alongside. This is what mcdonnell had to say about the show of support. God bless good friends and family. Reporter they packed a courtroom earlier as mcdonnell pleaded not guilty to the fraud and conspiracy charges against him. The former first lady did the same. Several gop lawmakers, including the House Speaker were there. I wanted to make sure bob knew his friends were there. And if he needs to call upon us for moral support, were here. The mcdonnells have surrendered their passports and cannot leave the country. They were indicted on tuesday on 14 charges of fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors say they accepted more than 165,000 of gifts and loans. In return, help promote one of his companys products. Many of the allegations were leaked and reported long before the indictment. Both judges have stern words for attorneys. This case is going to be tried in the courtroom, not going to be tried in the media. The gamesmanship with the media ends now. Friends say the hearing marks the beginning of mcdonnells chance to fight the allegations. Bobs got said he hasnt done anything illegal, United States government says he has. And so 12 jurors are going to decide what the truth is. The case has clearly taken a toll on the couple. In response to routine questions from the judge, Maureen Mcdonnell says shes taking medication for concentration issues and anxiety. Of course shes under a lot of stress and anxiety. I can only pray for and hope she gets the medication she needs and help. News 4 today. D. C. Police chief says shes been forced to rehire 28 socalled bad cops in the past two years. She testified before the d. C. Council on police misconduct. The hearing comes after the arrest of two d. C. Officers charged in Sexual Misconduct cases. Lanier says the court needs to tighten loopholes in the system. Many of those cases were dropped. Sams club is cutting back, but this time not on its prices. How the retail giant is about to make major cuts. And were keeping an eye on radar this morning. Some of us will see some snow flakes today, but were also going to sams club is laying off 2,300 workers. A Spokesman Says the company is cutting about 2 of the workforce. Inside the accident scene and he reveals whos getting blamed for that collapse. Reporter breaking news on a spring day. The scene was dizzying, rescue teams rushing to help. Developing a plan to stabilize the collapsed area. The workers, the jagged mash of metal and concrete with part of a parking garage collapsed. Seven months after the deadly accident, the news 4 iteam obtained our first look during the accident. Images obtained via the freedom of information act. This is the piece of concrete, part of a 42,000pound slab that fell. You see the huge cracks. And working on a tower amid this apparatus, carroll wills. Wills was crushed and killed. I miss him. Wills daughter spoke with us about the accident. It was a lot to take in when it first happened. He was so happy. He was so happy. He was at a place in his life where he hadnt been in a long time. A second worker suffered a horrific arm injury nearly resulting in amputation the records say. The news 4 iteam over a 7month period requested the photos snapped by county investigators and their investigative reports, too. And in each case, investigators cited whitingturner, the contractor, to add a Movie Theater complex above that garage. Montgomery county investigators called whitingturners work unsafe. The feds say the company did not comply with the safety standard and maryland investigators say the company failed to furnish a place of employment free from recognized hazards. The images obtained by the news 4 iteam show the damaged pieces inside. Investigators say the company failed to ensure this huge piece of concrete had the proper support from below and raised it and failed to put proper braces in the towers below the beam. Issued a payer of 5,000 fines and Montgomery County issued 2,000 more. Scott mcfarland with news 4. We tried multiple times to get comment from whitingturner. Maryland state officials told the news 4 iteam, the company is challenging the citations and the fines. Meantime, the mall project continues. The mall spokesman telling us the accident delayed completion of that theater scheduled to open in the fall and carroll wills says her father was proud to be working on a highprofile project talking about his job often in the days before the tragedy. He passed away doing something i know he loved. That was Scott Mcfarland reporting. Maryland state Officials Say they will hear arguments in whitingturners appeal on february 25th. The Smithsonian Center will open a new facility to the public. The museum is an annex to the smithsonian air and space museum. The site opened a massive 79 million restoration hangar and conservation lab. Today, they are offering a free open house for visitors to meet with the curators. And its right next to where i live and i have yet to go. Ive been there. You have . I bet its really cool because the air and space museum is awesome. I like that one better. Thats just my opinion.
