Today, drivers began retrieving the vehicles theyd abandoned on the side of icy, jampacked roads. The governor took the heat for failing to prepare for the minor snow and ice storm that crippled the city. We have two reports from atlanta tonight. First mark strassman. Mark. And businesses rem reporter scott, major roads are open again but most schools and businesses remain closed. Two days after two inches of snow and ice paralyzed the city, georgias governor admitted he blew it. Abandoned their cars during atlantas storm reclaimed them today. Other georgians went looking for answers. Who is really to blame is the question. Reporter callers on atlanta talk radio faulted city and state leaders for not being prepared. I believe that the governor is responsible. The buck stops with me. I accept the responsibility for it. Reporter georgia governor nathan deal had defended the states response for two days, but he admitted today that he had not closely followed the changing forecast. I did not know that it had been upgraded in a more serious warning had been issued. Reporter at 3 22 monday afternoon, the National Weather service put out a winter storm warning, one to two inches of snow in North Central georgia. But overnight at 3 38 tuesday morning, the update included all of metroatlanta and its five million residents. At 7 20 in the morning, Atlanta Mayor kasim reed tweeted, atlanta, we are ready for the snow. It began to fall around 11 a. M. Soon after, the governor tweeted this photo of him presenting atlantas mayor with a portrait as georgian of the year. By 2 00 p. M. Tuesday, schools, business and government offices began to empty at once. The gridlock and accidents made it impossible to treat the roads with salt. Children spent the night in schools, stranded commuters in store aisles and their cars. Yes, we did not have adequate preparation to encounter the storm as it came in the time frame in which it came, yes. I accept responsibility for that. Reporter Bogan Mitchell had to abandon his car and walk home on the ice. Do you think they just werent paying attention. I just dont think they took it seriously. I dont think they considered how bad it could happen to the city and they were lax in their response time. Today, attorney general eric holder announced that the government will seek the Death Penalty in the case of 20year old Dzhokar Tsarnaev. He is the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and wounded more than 200. Bob orr is following this for us tonight. Bob. Reporter scott, this is not really a surprise. While attorney general eric holder personally opposes capital punishment, the case against Dzhokar Tsarnaev simply was overwhelming and with this being a terrorist attack on american soil there was considerable pressure on holder to authorize prosecutors to seek the ultimate punishment. Prosecutors say they have strong evidence of premeditation, showing Dzhokar Tsarnaev, and his older brother, tamerlan, carried out an attack designed to kill multiple people. Videos allegedly show them placing a bomb on the marathon course, and Engaging Police in a runandgun battle four days later in watertown, massachusetts. By the time it was all over, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was dead including four others including an eightyearold boy and m. I. T. Police officer. In court papers, prosecutors say Dzhokar Tsarnaev knowingly created a grave risk of death and acted in a heinous, cruel, and depraved manner. At the scene of his capture, inside a boat where he had been hiding, police found an alleged confession scrawled by tsarnaev. Sources say he claimed credit for the attacks, justifying them as revenge for the death of innocent muslims. Pelley so, bob, given the development today, what happens in the case next . Reporter immediately, scott, theres a pretrial conference set for february 12. And the government said today its prepared to move forward. We have to know that tsarnaev so far has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor says hes shown no remorse at all. I have to tell you, scott, with the Death Penalty now on the table, it is possible his attorneys could seek some kind of deal for a life sentence. Well, this was all underwater. I mean, boats were everywhere. There was a whole marina here. Reporter pull is the general manager of the Southern Nevada water authority. She says the drought began 14 years ago. Satellite photos show the colorado river, which feeds lake meade, is drying up, so the lake is rapidly shrinking. Islands are growing. And boats are floating far from where they once were. How critical a point are we at . Its a pretty critical point. The rate at which our weather patterns are changing is so dramatic that our ability to adapt to it is really crippled. Reporter lake meade was created by the hoover dam in 1935. It provides water for 20 Million People in Southern Nevada, southern california, and arizona. Since 2000, the lake has lost 4 trillion gallons of water. This bath tub ring is going to get bigger. Lake meade is expected to drop at least another 20 feet this year. If it does, that could trigger automatic cuts to the water supply for nevada and arizona. That would hit las vegas hard. 90 of the areas water comes from the lake. At least one of the citys two intake pipes could soon be above water, so to save the water supply, nevada is rushing to build a third intake even deeper. These concrete slabs are being lowered 650 feet underground where a massive drill is creating a threemilelong tunnel, one inch per minute. The project should be finished next year and cost 817 million. J. C. Davis is the projects spokesperson. Were really scrambling to make sure this intake is done in time before we lose our first intake. Without lake meade, there would be no las vegas. Good evening, im ken bastida. Im elizabeth cook. Trouble this evening at Reid Hillview airport in san jose. A twinengine plane touches down but then something went wrong. Lets show you the scene from chopper 5 just a short time ago. These pictures show where the plane came to a screeching halt. It was a normal landing but then the plane skidded off the runway. It came to a rest on a perimeter fence that separates reidhillview airport from owe sala road. And two people on board walked away from that landing. There was some concern about fuel leaking from the plane. Now, about 30 minutes ago, airport crews attached a line to the plane and then pulled it off the fence. A few minutes after that the plane was being towed back to the hangar area. No real visible damage to the plane that we could tell.
