Right around 9 30, the my shake app sounded an earthquake alarm on tens of thousands of smart phones across the bay area, but turns out the warning was not very accurate. We spoke with people that run the app and asked them why the initial of the quake was so far off the mark. The quake rattled phones across northern california, but the message attached said a larger earthquake was to hit. It was it appears to be a much bigger earthquake. He says they optimize for safety, and when the initial shaking registers higher on the app, it alerts people in a wider geographic range.
