Greater numbers. Thanks for joining us everybody on kron 4 news at 5 im grant lotus and im Vicki Liviakis thousands of people all across the state of california. Or in the dark tonight pg and e has turned off the power in parts of 24 counties, including several right here in the bay area all in the name of preventing wildfires that is the goal, heres a look at pg and es latest outage map showing the areas experiencing these preemptive power shut off the purple indicates places that are without power tonight because of these intentional shut down to see parts of napa sonoma and solano counties and then further south portions of the Oakland Hills are affected as are customers east of 6. 80 there further south theyre talking about the south bay and parts of the peninsula, a vast area here of people dealing with this unwelcome roller coaster. We have Team Coverage tonight kron fours dan kerman is in the napa valley where thousands of people are still without electricity and kron fours rob fladeboe is in the Santa Cruz Mountains where the lights are beginning to come on. But first we want to go to our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow he is tracking the dangerous fire conditions that have ultimately. Force these Power Outages in the first place lawrence yes, so ironic weve got just really beautiful weather. But at the same time extremely dangerous of course were prime now weve seen the fires of the season throughout summer in the end here now in fall and you got that strong offshore wind developing around the bay area really. Gusting, especially this morning but the winds still whipping were looking at 2040 mile an hour winds still across many of our mountain peaks, but boy it was really ripping across parts of the mountains early on we had some wind gusts 60 miles an hour mount saint alina also diablo 60 mile an hour winds. There mom in the Santa Cruz Mountains to 53 healdsburg to 52 and even the Oakland Hills, pretty scary 38 mile an hour winds thats a very dry wind that has been showing up out there as weve seen some of the humidity dropping down below 10 around the bay area. Heres a look at some of the winds gusting right now in the north bay new see over the past 12 hours they begin to subside into the afternoon. So thats the good news, the strongest winds coming overnight and then begin to subside but thats going to change again overnight tonight were going to see another in polls of some strong gusty winds. Those offshore diablo winds really developing i think the main focus will be a little further to the north tonight, although it will be breezy and blustery over some of the top of the mountains and parts of the east bay also south bay. I think the strongest winds again will come overnight tonight in the north you see all the colors just kind of filling in there some 2030 mile an hour winds. But you start to look at some of the colors there to red and purple those are winds are gusting over 40 Miles Per Hour maybe not quite as strong as it was last night but Strong Enough certainly of a fire were to get started in these kind of conditions and those winds as we head through the morning there you can see more gusty Winds Continuing into the early spilling on the east bay too and also parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains looks like it will take until tomorrow afternoon before sea breeze returns and the fire danger should come to an end. All right, lets hope so large so customers in 7 bay area counties are affected by this preemptive power shut off. Among the counties with the largest number of outages napa county and thats where we find kron fours dan kerman. Who has the latest there well you know originally they talked about shutting off power to about 9200 napa county residents. But when the time came to flip the switch is if you will only 5,000 people were put without power of course they want to get back on as soon as possible, but its less than originally was planned. Still many are coping with this shut off as well as heat in the 90s. These calistoga homes west of the napa river have been without power since wednesday evening and will likely not get power back until sometime friday at the earliest its really which is a big a big hassle now we have to go through all of this but some have been through this so many times before theyre prepared for. I got the generator. Some time after the tubbs incident. And so now we just use we just try and power like the main things that are important like cell phones computers, extreme heat coupled with gusty winds were 2 of the key factors in pacific gas and electrics decision to shu off the power due to fire danger. And the forecast turned out to be correct. We didnt record those high winds last night at mount saint helene and napa county 65 Miles Per Hour when gus east of the napa river which includes most of downtown calistoga its a different story power is still on thanks to this microgrid or bank of generators still word of the shutdown coupled with the red flag warning has the streets and the stores relatively empty were here and were open its just been kind of slow because i think people are kind of. Careful with their red flag warning and again that electricity at least here in napa county probably sometime friday at the earliest for it to get back on again about 5,000 customers currently out here in the napa valley reporting live Dan Kerman Kron 4 news. Now to the south bay where some outages remain, but the powers starting to come back on for a lot of people who lost it overnight in the Santa Cruz Mountains, yeah, its hot in fire danger remains high. But the strong dangerous winds. Well, they never really materialized least for the Boulder Creek area and thats where we find. Of course rob fladeboe joins us now live for an update on the ps yes situation there. Rob. Thats right they can the winds are calm here in Boulder Creek and so our peoples nerves. At least a 500 or so remain without power after pg shut the power off to almost 5,000 customers, lets take a closer look. One of pg and es helicopter crews was inspecting transmission lines here in the san lorenzo valley thursday afternoon. Shot off wednesday night into this morning for roughly 5,000 customers across the Santa Cruz Mountains among those without electricity for a time here on rebecca drive in Boulder Creek was tracey lien bonds went out this morning 1010 30. My kids are on a zoom call for school dont think often and i no power. Business is slow and Resource Centers like this one where impacted people can find water snacks and power to charge phones and other devices about a 1000 fewer customers than anticipated actually lost power and most of those were back online by midday thursday said pg and e spokeswoman myra to estado by phone we have to top we have been able to restart of target number. Bow. About how our with the burn scar from the recent czu lightning complex fire looming over town. Boulder creek caught a break said one resident. Although helicopters buzzing overhead was a bit unnerving for some amid worries about the continuing fire weather. Despite the heat marber cali was enjoying the morning on her front porch. Pleased that she could step inside and enjoy the air conditioning if need be and the wind really never showed up so were im very thankful that they did not turn off the power one time a few years ago. They did turn off the power when the wind did not come they had warned us they turned it off and then we never had any wind. And that was that was rather irritating. But this time. They they would literally they waited until whether or not the wind came and when the wind didnt come they left the power on so. Now to be clear barbara lives here in Downtown Boulder which shot was luckier than she did not lose or power. But lawrence was saying it was a bit more windy over on the other side of the valley east of here along some of the road where many of those people are still without power. Live here in Boulder Creek rob fladeboe kron 4 news all right rob and were not just experiencing the heat advisory in Public Safety power shut offs but a flex alert as well cal iso thats the organization in charge of the States Energy grid.
